Talk:Defence player

Defenceman is a word that refers to male players only. I propose that this article be changed to "Defence Player", with a redirect to it from Defenceman. There are whole wikiprojects, Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gender_Studies and Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias, working to make sure that articles are written with neutral language. I'd like to see this article include all the female athletes out there who play defence positions. For example, soccer has Defender (football), and could apply to male or female players.

I'll even volunteer to chase down all the 'what links here' pages and update the links in them to the new page name. How about it folks?? ColtsScore 06:17, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, but see Help:Moving a page. If you follow those instructions the "Defenceman" page will automatically become a redirect to "Defence player", and you won't have to chase down all the "What links here" stuff--although it would be sensible to do so because those links would still contain gender-biased language. --Grace 00:48, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Strongly agree. There is probably a lot of gender-biased language in sports-related pages. Maybe this should become a major task for the Gender Studies WikiProject. roma rin

Agree. Clearly, any term using the suffix "-man" to refer to a team member who might be of any gender violates NPOV. And yes, there is certainly a need to clean up gender bias in sports articles. Deebki 13:16, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
