The way the list of references in the article is basically repeated below is ugly and there must be some wikipedia standard to do better, but since I don't know what that is, and don't have time to look it up just now, I'm leaving it for someone else to clean up. Neutral Point Of View Issue[edit]

The article claims, in a nutshell, that the deice does NOT work; However, the article cited only, in turn, cite older articles (from 25 years ago), studies from Finland and Switzerland , and an OPINION from the World Society for the Protection of Animals that state there was no known data “that shows that such devices can actually stop an animal crossing the road, which is the main purpose of the device.” The studies DID confirm, however, that the devices could generate audible wavelengths that, at short ranges, would be detected by deer and other animals, possibly alerting them to dangers.

Further proof, as the saying goes, is in the pudding; Or lack of carcasses, specifically. People travelling through animal-crossing danger zones with the devices have reported a drop off of sighted animals, and absolute drop in strikes (100% drop in strikes).

The idea behind these “studies” was the attempt to prove a negative- I can’t PROVE something can’t I won’t be robed if I walk through a bad neighborhood, for example, unless I walk through it. Then, if I’m not robbed, it still doesn’t prove I was right- It only proves it didn’t happen this time.

The reason deer whistles don't work is because deer become desensitized to them, the same way they've gotten desensitized to the noise from cars. If unusual noises were enough to scare them off you wouldn't see them grazing inches away from highway traffic without a care in the world. —96.247.205.198 (talk) 14:13, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you know of any studies that have demonstrated the devices' efficacy, please add them to the article. From looking over some of the existing citations, it seems that current evidence suggests that the devices do not produce a lowered animal collision rate. You are incorrect when you suggest that one can't "prove a negative". If the devices were effective, they would produce a lowered collision rate. Since they do not produce a lowered collision rate, we may conclude that they do not work. This is known as evidence of absence. However, I agree that the citation quality could be improved. Deer Horns - my thoughts and experience as to "do they work"[edit]

I killed a deer one night, working third shift, and someone told me about deer horns. I put a pair on my vehicle after I got it fixed, and the deer do hear them, believe me, I continued to see deer and other animals and they hear them. They stop on the side of the road and some of them nearly turn sideways when I get closer to them. Other animals that notice them are cats, raccoons,fox,and the owls,bats,and other birds. The racoons would run though.One night the mother raccoon ran across the road as I approached,and she had three following her. I had to slam on the brakes and I had enough time to stop. The bats would swoop down like it attracted them, and it was not the headlights, because it would happen around a corner. The owls that I saw would be taking of from the ground and fly off away from the vehicle. Cats that I saw would be crouching in the grass, running down the side of the road, up onto the side hill, and one jumped of the road on to a guard rail post. I also saw a porcupine on the side of the road that had its back turned and all its quills up waiting to protect itself. Some of the sick animals (mange) seemed to want to commit harry carry though. I wrote to the fish and game department about game fence on that stretch of the highway where I killed the deer, because there are so many collisions with deer and moose. Signs do not help at night, and I think this subject should be a requirement to people getting there drivers license. There is another entry about the deer getting use to the noise that deer horns make, and I think they would get use to it if it was used as a cheaper substitute for game fence, and was a constant. I've killed more deer with an automobile than with a firearm. This is what Wikipedia calls original research and unusable for the article. Now, if anyone had a citation of an insurance company making deer whistles mandatory, or giving them away with every policy, that would be notable and show some statistical confidence in their effect. Has anyone ever heard of an auto insurer recommended deer whistles? That would be a useful point in this article. --Wtshymanski (talk) 23:40, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
