Removing some duplication is not a valid answer. You have lost the contribution history of everyone who worked on the content.
The content's meaning (not just it's wording) still duplicates the existing page

Merge to European Summer Time[edit]

Agree but only provided it is that way round. There shouldn't be an article called "Daylight saving time in Europe" at all, as that is contrary to European official terminology - see the introduction to Daylight saving time - Arjayay (talk) 11:46, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I propose that Daylight saving time in Europe be merged into European Summer Time. The articles cover exactly the same subject, but European Summer Time is the correct title, (see Daylight saving time) and includes a map and formula for deriving the dates. Agree. This article clearly has had a short but quite troubled history. The creator copied the material from Daylight saving time by region and country, before then hiving off material into a whole series of series of individual country pages, which then got nominated for deletion and merged straight back here. All a bit a mess really - it's time to put this page out of its misery and merge to European Summer Time. Pasicles (talk) 19:35, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: While we're on the subject I would like to run this past you. At the moment our "Daylight Saving time in X" articles are pretty redundant. We have several overview articles
Daylight saving time by country
Daylight saving time by region and country

and

then you have all of the country specific articles. to my mind we should get rid of "by region and country" and merge into the continent level articles, or country specific articles. Since all of the information there is already covered by lower level articles. Any objections? Many, if not most, of the above articles were created by User:TZ master who has since been permanently blocked.

I agree one global article would be too big and cumbersome, the table in Daylight saving time by country is long enough without supporting explanations, history and other text. "By continent" would group lots of countries with similar regulations together e.g. the EEC countries, which are what this move would affect most.

However, as can be seen on this map, certain continents, such as Africa, are a little strange, as, ignoring a few islands related to European countries (the Canaries, Maderia etc) there are only 2 countries that do change their clocks, one in each hemisphere. Although in the same continent, combining Morocco and Namibia would not, necessarily, make a logical article.

[Category:Daylight saving time by country] lists 4 sub categories, covering Australia, Canada, UK and US, and 21 country based articles, although many of these articles e.g. Daylight saving time in Argentina are totally unreferenced. Time in the Falkland Islands does not appear in this category, so there may be others.

So, I agree the problem is wider than just Europe, but Daylight saving time in Europe and European Summer Time are all but totally duplicious, so I suggest they are dealt with first

I think it's safe to say we can merge the two European articles, as I'm quite sure we won't get any more commentary. It's also been more than a week. I will begin the process when I get a moment, unless you do it first.

While the continent level articles are a little bit arbitrary, and it is true that the Africa article will have little to say, and the South American and Oceania also relatively little, but it needs to go somewhere. The Asia article could deal with the history of countries that have used the practice and now abandoned it, plus the handful that still do use it. I will eventually start merging content from the "countries and regions" article to the continent level or country specific articles as appropriate.

The other question I have is whether or not to do a North America article. It seems odd not to considering there is one for every other continent, while North America is of two continents that actually uses the system very widely. But the Canada and USA articles cover 95% of what would be needed. Perhaps a basic place holder article directing users to the two big countres + Mexico and including info on the various Caribbean islands? Peregrine981 (talk) 22:11, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
