Exact birth date[edit]

Rikster2 WP:DOB which is part of the policy page WP:BLP says Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public. In the absence of a citation to a reliable source, such wide publication cannot be presumed. I routinely remove exact birth dates, trimming them to the year alone, in any BLP article, unless they are cited inline to a reliable source indicating that the date has already been widely published, or published by the subject. Moreover, it is my view that in most cases exact birth dates are not encyclopedic, but are mere trivia. The year of birth is in most cases sufficient to give context to a biographical article, the exact date is rarely of much importance, and is better omitted even if it can be sourced. This latter view does not have clear consensus, but requiring a cie for DOBs seems to have.

Please consider this a challenge to an unsourced fact in a BLP. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 23:19, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

See your talk page for response. For NBA players their dates of birth appear everywhere - from their team profile (which is linked in the infobox of this article) to every trading card they have appeared on - which in Lillard’s case is literally hundreds. But I cited it. Rikster2 (talk) 23:23, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DESiegel: Per MOS:OPENPARABIO, it's generally expected that birthdates are listed , when available. While all information needs to be verifiable, editors also have a responsibility to WP:PRESERVE information, when possible. There are a reasonable number of sources listing his birthdate, available on a basic search. Were you not sure if they were reliable? Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 00:56, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Bagumba For BLPs MOS:OPENPARABIO is superceeded by WP:DOB and does not apply. The source needs to be more than reliable it needs to be widely published as well. My normal practice is to remove any uncited exact birth dates from any BLP. If there is a source I may check it or just accept it, but I won't usually go looking for sources for info I really don't think we need in any case. If someone else wants to cite the info, fine. and WP:PRESERVE says Preserve appropriate content. I am not convinced that an exact birth date is appropriate content in the fist place. What actual value does it have? Well this is not the right place to debate the general policy. The date here has been cited and seems to have been widely published, so I have no further objections to it in this article. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 01:08, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DESiegel: WP:DOB does not mention that it necessarily needs to be cited, nor does verifiability require that everything be cited. WP:UNSOURCED policy does say: When tagging or removing material for lacking an inline citation, please state your concern that it may not be possible to find a published reliable source and the material therefore may not be verifiable. Which is why I asked if you were skeptical that sources you found were reliable. However, you said you didn't look for a source, and generally don't in these cases, and that you don't agree with the widely followed practice at MOS of specifying DOBs. While it's OK if you start a new bio and choose not to include a DOB, it's another thing to remove existing DOBs that are widely published and verifiable, merely because it's uncited.—Bagumba (talk) 04:53, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Bagumba MOS:OPENPARABIO says: For living persons, privacy should be considered (see WP:BLPPRIVACY, which takes precedence). Many of the various specific versions of {{Infobox person}} instruct that for a BLP {{Birth year and age}} should be used instead of {{Birth date and age}} All of which I take to mean that there is not a consensus to include the exact date for BLPs unless there is evidence that the date is widely published (not just verifiable) or else distributed by the subject or with the subject's consent. Such evidence should either be a citation, or talk page discussion. It may be that in this case the removal was an error on my part, but most cases where an uncited exact date of birth is included do not turn out that the date had been widely published. The general principle holds, IMO. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 05:15, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DESiegel: I trust that areas you typically edit might not have widely published birthdates. With the big American sports, that's usually not the case. I don't expect everyone to actually know that, but that's where searching might be more critical when wading into perhaps unfamiliar domains. Best.—Bagumba (talk) 05:29, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request on 14 February 2020[edit]

can you please make changes under the "rap career" title, add "on 9th August, 2019" after "Lillard released his third album, Big DOLLA" since it would be more clear of a timeline for the readers to know the release date of the album. here is the source for this http://onsmash.com/music/damian-lillard-big-dolla-tracklist-release-date/ Also can you add "Although Lillard will be missing the all star game and 3 point contest, he will still step up to the stage and deliver a rap performance on Saturday night in Chicago as part of the All-Star festivities." at the end of the second paragraph under "rap career" tittle. source for this: https://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/2020/02/damian-lillard-will-rap-at-nba-all-star-weekend-as-planned-despite-injury-report.html

appreciated if this change is made!! Lannyperm (talk) 13:22, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I did the first edit that you requested, but as for the second one, it says "...and deliver a rap performance on Saturday night...". That is not quite the tone of an encyclopedia and I didn't feel comfortable doing it. DarthFlappy (talk) 00:40, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"As a senior, he averaged 22.4 points and 5.2 assists per game while leading the Oakland Oakers to a 23–9 record" The mascot of Oakland High School in Oakland, Californa is Wildcats. The Oakland Oakers is Oakland, Oregon. Please change Oakers to Wildcats.

Additional High School edit request, 30 August 2020[edit]

The city listed for his freshman year is incorrect as he attended Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo and not in El Monte. The article used in the citation doesn't list the city but this article with Coach Lippi specifies the city, albeit he lists it as San Leandro. On the NBA website, NBA Bubble MVP and All-NBA Bubble First Team are official awards. So can we get that put into Dame’s Awards section please? Can we also get info on Dames music in NBA2K21. He released a whole bunch of songs on the game and also a new Single KOBE with snoop dog I can see no mention of this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:1970:54A5:A300:AD3B:B5CD:CCCD:4F21 (talk) 23:47, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bubble MVP is already in the awards section of the article. There was extensive discussion about Bubble MVP and All-Bubble and the consensus was NOT to add these to the list of highlights in the infobox. See here. Rikster2 (talk) 00:21, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rikster2. That’s my bad I must have missed that, but what about my second point, he has songs on NBA 2K 21 which should be mentioned in the music section and he also just released a new single with snoop dogg called Kobe — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:1970:54A5:A300:AD3B:B5CD:CCCD:4F21 (talk) 00:26, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(Suggested addition under PERSONAL LIFE)

On October 1st 2020, Lillard announced that he had purchased a Toyota dealership in the city of McMinnville, OR just outside Portland. The dealership was purchased with longtime friend and industry veteran, Brian Sanders and was subsequently renamed Damian Lillard Toyota. On the same day, McMinnville Mayor Scott Hill declared October 1st officially Damian Lillard Day to recognize Lillard's contributions to the city and to the State of Oregon.
