Possible photo - but have questions[edit]

I decided to expand my search for a photo of Ratufa affinis, by searching through other language Wikipedias, and I found a photo in the Thai language Wikipedia under the article on this squirrel. Here is the URL for this photo:

http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%9F%E0%B8%A5%E0%B9%8C:Cream-coloured_Giant_Squirrel_in_suan_nongnush_.jpg

There are a couple of problems though: 1) I don't know how to connect a file in another language Wikipedia to an English language article.

2) It appears that this photo may not have proper copyright approval for its use. I ran the copyright statement attached to it through an online translator at http://www.stars21.com/translator/thai_to_english.html and the machine cranked out the following text as a translation:

This image is copyrighted images from the owner. Not to upload copyright of Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation in any way.

The uploaded image is considered to be rightfully applied to bring the article contains only. This image is not approved, contract documents, free of a preliminary permit or license Creative Commons contract. This sounds like the Thai user who uploaded it to the Thai Wikipedia shouldn't have used it. If that's the case, then I will not want to use it either.

Any help in this matter is appreciated. --Saukkomies talk 00:57, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the copyright status for that looks fishy. You could try contacting one of the people who took photos of this article at Flickr ([1]) and asking them to release their photos under CC-BY-SA for use on Wikipedia. Ucucha 01:02, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I solved the problem. I solved it by finding another photo! I kept digging, and in the Bahasa Melayu language Wikipedia I found another photo of R. affinis that has a CC-BY-SA 2.5 Copyright attached to it - which permits free use of the work so long as the source is cited.
However, I still don't know how to make a link to another language Wikipedia file, other than the dumb way of downloading it to my own computer and then uploading it into the English Wiki. Any suggestions? --Saukkomies talk 01:11, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, here's the URL for the Melayu language photo: http://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fail:Affinis.jpg --Saukkomies talk 01:12, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's not a particularly good one, though. You'd best upload the file to Wikimedia Commons; see http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=fromwikimedia for the dedicated upload form for that. Ucucha 01:16, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I agree the photo is not the best - but it is a photo. Maybe we'll make note of that here (hey! I'm actually doing just that!) of the fact that we're using this photo for want of any other, but a better photo would be much appreciated. Thanks for the link to the Wikicommons help page. --Saukkomies talk 01:19, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
