Merge proposal

NO - please don't merge it! We need to know where to find informatoin specifically on Mettoy - they were a big enough producer of toys to warrant a separate article. DavidFarmbrough

Yes, this article sorely needs more work to bring it up to standard. I remember playing with many of these toys as a boy, and I have particularly fond memories of the James Bond and Batmobile vehicles. It would add immeasurably to this article if some of these models could be illustrated. --Surgeonsmate 11:47, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Personal involvement

Although I can sympathise with the sentiments expressed in this line:

the Chevrolet Camaro SS350 (338) was all new, and one of this author's favourite models.

it is inappropriate for an encyclopaedia to provide personal opinions, particularly when "this author" is an anon.

Again, this article is sorely in need of some images of these wonderful models. Is "this author" a collector with access to a digital camera? --Surgeonsmate 21:47, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

To combine or not to combine

I am new here so I don't profess to know all the rules. But as a more "neutral" observer who is just entering the fray in a topic that interests him (die-cast cars) and whose opinion is not yet colored by facets of what may be a long-going debate, I feel that this page should not be combined with Corgi Classics, but should be changed drastically from its current form. Much of the material presented here should be elsewhere, not here.

Mettoy, or Mettoy Playcraft, warrants an own page as the maker of Corgi and other toys. However, its history should be brief or at least more general -- i.e. less Corgi-specific. Almost all of the detailed information contained on this page re. the actual Corgi line (models, model history, etc.) should be on a dedicated page. I believe that this dedicated page could be the Corgi Classics page. However, if this is not desirable for reasons of "historical correctness", then I believe you should "go the long (but technically correct) route":

1) Mettoy (or Mettoy Playcraft): a page describing the company, its history in general, and its products, with cross-references to a dedicated page for Corgi toys.

2) Corgi Classics Ltd.: a page describing the company, its history in general (incl. the circumstances of its formation), and its products, with cross-references to a dedicated page for Corgi toys.

3) Corgi (toys): a new page containing most of the Corgi-model cars/trucks-specific info currently contained in various forms on the Mettoy-Corgi and Corgi Classics pages, including basics of the Mettoy and Corgi Classics history, with reference to those pages.

I am also dissatisfied with similar pages for Corgi's competition. The Matchbox page is called "Matchbox (toy company)". There is not and never was a company named "Matchbox". It should be "Matchbox (toys)" with separate pages for Lesney, Mattel, and whatever else is necessary to correctly illustrate the history, the company (companies), and the product. (Obviously, the same would hold true for Dinky/Meccano/Matchbox, etc., if these pages are similarly flawed.) These entries smack of haste and less-than-optimum aforethought. They are to some extent factually incorrect, although usable. But to fulfill the purpose of an encyclopedia in its true sense, they should be changed.

The history of Corgi in three movements

Corgi went in three stages

1, 1956 to 1970 = the golden years

2, 1970 to 1983 = decline and fall

3, Corgi Classics - the collectable models made today

This article covers periods one and two very well, however it is duplicated by the Corgi Toys article in some areas and would bear combining with it. Ther latter period and the products sold today as Corgi really have nothing to do with the mettoy period and combining this article with anything to do with the current Corgi product would be meaningless, excellent as the new models are, they are not the same. The new ones are exact scale models aimed solely at the adult collector, the early Corgis were toys aimed at the boy with a love of engineering in general and cars in particular. I know, I was and remain one into my fifties.

Very well organized, Landyman. Still, I believe that the Corgi name represents all models produced by Mettoy-Mattel-Corgi Classics, and that the optimum presentation would be to combine the articles into a more organized, less overlapping, and more encyclopedic version. It could be divided just as you say, and also stress the differences in nuance when one speaks of a Corgi model today or in 1970. I am also a long-time collector of British car models and would like to see these articles all cleaned up and brought up to a better standard.

Mettoy-Corgi or Corgi Toys

Given that this article is about Corgi Toys, I propose that it be renamed to reflect just that. Wikipedia naming convention specifies that titles be Recognizable, Easy to find, Precise, Concise & Consistent. I suggest that these five points would be much better met with the article renamed as suggested. GTHO (talk) 10:09, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
