It's not necessarily that I-275/M-275 would have been "too expensive" to construct. The route was planned and approved by the FHWA in 1971 and funding was assigned to the project in the mid-1970s. The real reason I-275 was never completed was the numerous lawsuits by influential Oakland County residents (many of whom resided in Commerce Township) regarding a perceived reduction in property values. MDOT was "ready to roll" with this next phase of I-275, as could be witnessed prior to the completion of the M-5 Haggerty Connector in 1994. This could be observed for many years by the numerous "ghost ramps" in the I-275, I-96, I-696, M-102 interchange which were finally used for M-5 in 1994. In late 1977, following the completion of the existing I-275/I-96 concurrency route, overwhelming opposition first resulted in MDOT scaling back I-275 to a limited-access expressway (much like the current M-5), then known as "M-275". However, as more and more locals opposed the route, it was eventually dropped and MDOT sold much of the right-of-way in the 1980s (nearly all of it was already obtained by 1978). In fact, this critical link is so important to the regional transportation network that MDOT revisited the idea in the early-1990s and constructed the new M-5 in three phases, to 12 Mile in 1994, 14 Mile by 1996, and to Maple in 2002. Recently, the path was extended further, albeit with a significantly revised cross-section. I do believe this route will be completed eventually as it would have massive economic benefit to the region. However, there is a "gentleman's agreement" than M-5 as we know it will not go any further at this time. However, this was the belief in 2002, that M-5 would not extend past Maple. Despite the extension not being an official state highway, I am confident that some route will eventually be completed to I-75.
