Banjo Players[edit]

"Hayes's banjo playing was essentially rhythmic rather than melodic and is generally unobtrusive and very tasteful, two qualities often lacking in jazz banjoists."

The pejoritive nature of this comment is uncalled for. If the author doesn't like banjo music, he shouldn't be writting about Hayse. Altho I have played banjo for over fifty years, I can't think of anyone who obviously lacks taste or is unusually "obtrussive." Most leaders in the first part of the century put the banjo in the front line (e.g. Paul Whitemen, Spike Jones) because it is very visual; i.e. the music goes up when the banjoist goes up the neck.
