False claims of vandalism[edit]

RE: edit by Orlady (((11:08, 12 April 2008 (hist) (diff) City School District of New Rochelle‎ (revert last two edits; main purposes were (1) dewikification and (2) addition of content previously removed as copyvio or other reasons))) Users provided false claim of addressing previously removed content. No info was added or removed in either the inital contributions of 69.86.92.251 or the following reverts by Orlady. The claim originated from Orlady, apparently as an attempt to both create the appearance of wrong-doing on the part of 69.86.92.251, and to justify the following actions by Orlady against 69.86.92.251. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.176.86.237 (talkcontribs) 00:31, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merger of Henry Barnard School[edit]

I believe I have effectively merged the subject article, so I am redirecting the article here. --Orlady (talk) 02:44, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Improving this entry[edit]

I want to make edits to this entry. I am a New Rochelle resident, my children go to school in New Rochelle and my wife works for the District. From reading the history of this entry I can see there has been some vandalism and sock-puppetry going on here. I also see that Orlady has been the most active editor of this entry so perhaps my comments here are directed primarily at her. There are many things - good and bad - that are not mentioned in this entry. For example, there is no mention of the nationally competitive sports programs at New Rochelle. The football team has produced a recent Heisman Trophy candidate (Ray Rice) and been to the state championship the last few years. Rice was drafted and plays in the NFL. The track time has produced an Olympic caliber athlete. There is no mention of the school district's performance on any of the State Report Cards. There is also no mention of some controversies such as a major racial incident last year involving a stuffed animal hung on a noose. In light of the major civil rights case mention in the article and the role of the NAACP in the noose incident this would seem to be worth including in the entry. A major event in the history of the school was a massive arson fire in 1968 which destroyed almost the entire high school. The school district has graduated an impressive array of students who went on to highly successful careers especially in the field of journalism (Andrea Mitchell of NBC News, Don Hewitt of 60 Minutes, Gloria Borger of CNN and many more). I will be check back in a few weeks to see if anyone has responded to this comment to see what consensus emerges but I would like to see this entry greatly expanded. --rcox1963 (talk) 14:44, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This Orlady person is not particularly interested in controlling this article, and in fact is not particularly interested in the New Rochelle School District. If contributions to this article were consistent with Wikipedia policies (including but not limited to WP:NOT and WP:V) and guidelines (including but not limited to WP:MOS, WP:RS, and WP:EL), she probably wouldn't go near the article. Unfortunately, the article has been subject not just to "some" vandalism and sock-puppetry, but to massive amounts of garbage from a prolific sockpuppeteer who seems to be hostile toward Wikipedia, its policies, its guidelines, and other Wikipedia contributors. Please believe that I don't derive pleasure from identifying blatant copyright violations (especially the ones that are accompanied by fake references), sockpuppets, and open proxies, nor do I enjoy cleaning up the mess after a series of sockpuppets have gone through an article and replaced standard wikiformat with font-size codes and other nonstandard formatting.
Please note, however, that (1) this article is actually more thoroughly developed than at least 98% of the school district articles in Wikipedia and (2) almost everything you want to add to the article is related not to the school district but the high school, which has its own article, New Rochelle High School, already including almost everything you mention. The high school article would benefit from attention by an honest person who cares about the school. The article includes many details that are completely unsourced (either supply a source or delete them), plus many references that are "naked" or bot-generated and that need to be checked (to verify that they really support the facts they are attached to, as well as to get publication details) and filled in.
In editing these articles, please be mindful of WP:NOT and WP:N. Keep it encyclopedic. Both the high school article and the school district article have at times appeared to be copy-pasted from a New Rochelle real estate broker's brochure -- overloaded with glowing language and unsourced bragging about the schools' superlatives. Also, there is a general tendency to load school articles with "cruft" like the results of last Tuesday's JV volleyball game, the 3rd grade chess club's record of victories in the annual city-wide elementary school chess tournament, SAT test results, complete lists of course offerings and clubs, the bell schedule, and even the names of the cafeteria ladies. There is plenty of cruft to trim from the NRHS article; for example, the lists of sports in New Rochelle High School#Interscholastic sports could be converted to a paragraph identifying the sports offered and indicating that some sports have both varsity and JV teams. Lists like "Boys Junior Varsity Lacrosse, Boys Varsity Lacrosse, Girls Junior Varsity Lacrosse, Girls Varsity Lacrosse" may belong in the yearbook (because each team has a separate team photo), but they don't belong in an encyclopedia article. --Orlady (talk) 00:54, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • You should have no trouble finding answers to your query just by reviewing the article and its associated articles (as well as comparable articles on schools and school districts). You certainly seem to have a good understanding of the site already. Much of the information you mentioned as worth mentioning are indeed covered already. Sports achievements are noted in the high school article, but if certain notable accomplishments are lacking then you might consider adding them yourself. The most notable alumni have also been documented, as they tend to be in all school articles. The major event of the high school fire has been included in the article, and has been significantly trimmed down of facts in a state or local level forum. The segregation issue faced by the school district in the 60's was a highly significant event and turning point for the school district, however its entry in this article had also been trimmed of most of its content. Also, all schools get assessed by their respective states yet those results are not found to be relevant enough for inclusion. National reports and rankings are much more likely to be used and to be seen as notable. --69.10.33.195 (talk) 06:29, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
