Family[edit]

Nice to see such an extensive new bio. Does anyone know how this Christian is related to the Grindelwalder mountain guides Ulrich Kaufmann (1840–1917; brother-in law of Christian Almer) and Christian Kaufmann (? - << 1888). In August 1857, those three guided Sigismund Porges near the top of the Eiger (would have been a first ascent) and to the top of the Mönch (the first ascent). Christian Kaufmann senior could very well be the grandfather of this Christian, as (looking at the baptism on 27 May 1832, natus 21 May) Grabi Peter's father's name was indeed Christ[i]an Kaufmann (mother Mary Burunt??) Ulrich, born 31 May but baptized on 7 June 1840, was the son of another Peter Kaufmann and Susanna Haumann (Baumann?), who were married in 1836. Afasmit (talk) 02:14, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I should have pinged P.dreher. If you're up for it, I think that Ulrich (1840–1917) deserves an English page as perhaps the most accomplished of the Kaufmann family. He made first the ascents of Mönch, Schreckhorn, and Gross Fiescherhorn. The way before its time near-first ascent of Aoraki / Mount Cook in 1882 (they came within 50 m) he basically did single-handedly. And if he indeed dragged Boss and Graham to near the top of Kabru North (7,338 m) in 1883, he broke the altitude record by at least 360 m and held it for 26 years. Ruten[edit]

I would like to encourage someone checking whether the correct Ruten mountain is linked. The Norwegian Wikipedia lists four mountains named Ruten, and one of them https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruten_(Nord-Fron) is a important mountain of my childhood, and it is just a couple of days hiking from Nautgardstind, which towers prominently from what was likely the farms they he must have passed. It seems highly likely that he visited these two mountains together.

Ruten (Oppland) near Fefor[edit]

Hello Kjetil, Thank you for calling my attention to the reference and the link (Mt.Ruten) in the Christian Kaufmann (Alpine Guide) article. The link was indeed incorrect. I did not realize that there were several Ruten peaks (Henne, Oppland, Selbu, and Troms)in Norway. I rechecked John W.S. Brady's entry (September 16, 1912) in Kaufmann's Führerbuch. Brady writes: "In Norway, where we stayed three weeks at the Fefor Hotel, and at Bessheim, on account of the bad weather, we made only two tours: the Ruten at Fefor and at Bessheim the Nautgarstind" (p. 165). I have changed the sentence and the link for that sentence in the article. I added an English footnote rather than the Wikipedia one in Norwegian. I suspect that Kaufmann and Brady enjoyed the farmland between Nautgarstind and Ruten, for many of Kaufmann's clients said that they valued Christian as a guide not only for his expertise in rock and snow work, but also in his love and appreciation of nature. If you have any addition historical (1912) insights into this area, I would be very interested in hearing about them. And, by the way, does one add Mt., Mount, Peak, or some other destination to these mountains in Norway? Thanks again for taking the time with this reference. Peter Dreher
