Philosopher

I seriously doubt that Chris Martin, philosopher should be part of this article; it's surely self-promotion. Especially since the section was written by User:Chrisjwmartin himself. Tried removing it and was rebuffed. Gareth Wyn 21:27, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Apologies Gareth - I created the page at the request of contemporaries before we'd read the advice not to create one's own page - I'd have got someone else to submit my text had I known. We simply thought that the subject was best positioned to sum their processive content. However, since their attention was drawn to it, they have added other aspects such as my artistic work which I (modestly) hadn't intended to mention, so fret not - worldly editing is editing my world for you.

Yes, sorry for any confusion, but he didn't realise that he wasn't supposed to be adding his own entries. I hope that this clears things up for now.

"Dry Your Eyes"

Err, 'scuse, but he didn't actually write Dry Your Eyes, he just appeared on an early version which he (or his record company) then refused to release. See this for proof:

'I wrote the track and I thought that he (Martin) would sound really good on it. I asked him to do it and he did. After that I don't really know. I don't think his record company liked it. But maybe he didn't like it. On the day he was (happy with it). Well, maybe he wasn't, maybe he was lying to me and he walked out going 'This is not working'. But it wasn't massive stress. It would have been nice, but we've re-recorded it and it sounds great.'

Actually, Chris appears on an alternate version of the song, on the Dry Your Eyes single.[1] :--Madchester 00:40, 2005 Apr 27 (UTC)

External links

Hey, should we dispose of the external links? The first and third have got nothing to do with Chris. Yeah well, he's a member of Coldplay, but what bugs me off is the name. "Official site" is crap since it's not Chris's official site. Arie Riswandy

This should be in Influences : In 2005, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin called himself "a poor man's Fran Healy". --Fran Healy —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.22.31.165 (talk) 06:44, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Ambidextrous?

According to the article, "Martin is ambidextrous; he writes with his left hand, plays the guitar the orthodox way, and draws with his right hand."

Is that considered to be ambidextrous? It says nothing about writing with both hands or drawing with both, simply that he uses a different hand for different activities. And what does it mean about playing the guitar "the orthodox way?" Guitars can be either left- or right-handed, so this statement should be removed, and I will be removing it. The former is still open for discussion, though. Phs1234 (talk) 02:19, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Clarinet?

Why does it say that he plays clarinet? That obviously needs a cited source because I have never heard a Coldplay song or song with Chris Martin that includes clarinet, and don't ever remember him mentioning it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.121.74.219 (talk) 00:44, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

I do believe this information to be false. There seems to be no evidence, and i find it highly unlikely that this is true. It definitely needs to be looked at. It's a funny thought to say the least! Alyssa inkpen-white (talk) 19:42, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

9/11

"Martin's criticism of the American Government was perhaps at its loudest when he masterminded the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon building in 2001." Chris Martin may have done many, many horrible things, but this one doesn't seem likely. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.139.53.126 (talk) 18:38, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Chris Martin can not read music

I gave a source that could not be any clearer, I gave you the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeJumiH5aF0 At 0:08 seconds he says "I can't read music" I couldn't be any clearer than that. And how is it controversial? Are you saying that wikipedia is deliberately deleting stuff because it's controversial, yet it could be true?

Origin

What on Earth does "Origin" (London) mean in the info box on the right? Looks like pointless and useless information that isn't there for other artists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.163.0.29 (talkcontribs)

Muse influence?

I have concerns about Muse being listed as an influence, under "influences"; the only cited source is another wiki (the Muse Wiki), which in turn cites only two sources on the subject, one of which is a guestbook entry supposedly by Chris Martin himself (but with no convincing evidence that it's actually him), and the other of which is an article that can no longer be found by following the link. That sentence should probably be removed unless more reputable sources can be found. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.36.207.253 (talk) 06:35, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Radiohead

We all know that they are among coldplay's influences, but the "left nut quote" don't have any reference to it, so unless that a link to that rolling stone interview appears it must be removed. aditionally, to say that they are Martin's primary influence is a false statement since Martin have stated that the band Travis is coldplay's primary influence.[2] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Carnotaurus044 (talkcontribs) 03:45, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Tenor

Chris Martin can't be classified as a tenor. Voice classification is not possible in popular music, since singers rarely receive classical training. I removed the sentence that said he is a tenor. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Luistamez (talkcontribs) .

I've put the word tenor back on the article because it doesn't matter if it's classical music or pop, voice classification is the norm in all forms of music. The moment you hear one person sing, you can classify his range almost immediately, especially on pop artists, since these rarely have an extraordinarily wide vocal range. (Crazy chap)

Chris Martin would in fact be a baritone. he is able to reach higher registers only due to his masterful use of falsetto.

Baritone? Are you serious? Typically, when not using falsetto, Martin sings in the high tenor to low alto range. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hearsayheresy (talkcontribs) 01:53, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Highest I've heard him go without falsetto is a high G, and that's only recently. That's at the top of a Baritone's range, he's nowhere near high tenor/alto, especially when you consider how low he can sing as well, at least a low G, but it doesn't sound weak down there so he probably still has a couple more notes. I have no doubt that he's a baritone, people just think he has a higher voice because of how much he uses falsetto. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.223.165.139 (talk) 15:45, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Chris Martin is indeed a Tenor singer, that's why I changed it initially from the incorrect classification of Baritone. You are right to say that he does sing in the falsetto range a lot and also that he can sing some lower notes but that doesn't change the fact that his average range is to be found in the tenor register.

86.146.230.29 (talk) 23:05, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Bring a tenor, I could say it has more to do with the timber of the voice production/presentation. Does it matter? He just took the lead in Super Bowl 50 and you could classify him as either. I, myself, am a 'second tenor' (which is 'lead tenor' as opposed to 'high tenor') and he sang the lead. -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 04:02, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Actually, I guess it doesn't matter and if you search the article for 'tenor' and also 'baritone', you will now find neither. -- AstroU (talk) 04:06, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Tenors Category (2.0)

Hi,

Martin is a Baritone. In this video you can hear him reach G2 [3] (2:21) . If someone here thinks he is also a tenor, please bring an example of Martin singing at least Bb4 in FULL VOICE and not falsetto. (Because his abilities to sing high notes in falsetto can maybe classify him as countertenor but they are irrelevant to his full voice classification.) Regards Yeshurun (talk) 11:52, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

The article does not say he is a baritone, tenor or anything else. To say any of those things, we would need a reliable source directly stating that. We do not have such a source, so we say nothing. Without a source, there is nothing to discuss here. - SummerPhDv2.0 16:58, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
The article's included in the English tenors Category. Yeshurun (talk) 07:34, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Alleged hypocrisy

Shouldn't there be at least some reference to the alleged hypocrisy of Chris Martin, concerning environment, Fairtrade, etc...? There are thousands of websites found by Google on this matter. Their accusations varying from his 'Hollywood lifestyle', his 4x4 to flying jet planes, etc. I think (some of) these concerns should be included, since Chris Martin's (political) activism is so widespread and wellknown. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.159.97.6 (talk) 10:39, 19 September 2008 (UTC) Any very rich celebrity who spends money on and speaks in favor of charity work is accused of the same 'hypocrisy'. If Martin gives part of his earnings to different charity organisations, that's good. What he does with the rest of the money is up to him. Margy Margy7 (talk) 22:37, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

I believe Chris Martin is the creative director of the Global Citizen Festival, if someone more familiar with his work and career wishes to expand the festival's article further. ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:36, 6 August 2015 (UTC) Here you can listen to how Chris Martin defines his role for Global Citizens https://www.daserste.de/information/nachrichten-wetter/ard-sondersendung/videos/pop-trifft-politik-g20-in-hamburg-chris-martin-100.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Margy7 (talkcontribs) 13:00, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

I personally think it's not needed, specially considering how Coldplay already has a very big one. After all, he's not well known for solo works, but for projects made along with Berryman, Buckland, Champion and Harvey. --GustavoCza (talk) 16:08, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Infobox image

The article's gone through 4 different images so far this month. Please discuss here and get consensus for a single image. @GustavoCza and Rangel Carregosa:, personally, I think the version by Y2kcrazyjoker4 looks best but there's got to be a way to do it without all that special formatting. Schazjmd (talk) 16:21, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

The way without all that special formatting is the version I have in place. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 16:22, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
@GustavoCza, it isn't as good as the "special" version. Schazjmd (talk) 16:28, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
I did sent a message to Rangel's talk page and perhaps if focusing on his face is an issue, I can upload a new version, with a zoom, cropping a bit of Chris' legs or whatever. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 16:24, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
The portrait format looks better in infobox and the one I put in also shows his face better. Rangel Carregosa (talkcontribs) 16:28, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
It shows his face more but he looks better in the current one. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 16:32, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
@Rangel Carregosa, I agree that a portrait-like image with clearer focus on the face is better, but the one you added looks rather...doofusy? I think the article could present him better than that. Schazjmd (talk) 16:33, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Just cropped the image a bit. Another reason why I think the 4:3 proportion is better is because of how it makes the infobox wider, which in turn eliminates unnecessary extra lines. So everything looks less cluttered. GustavoCza (talkcontribs) 16:38, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
That's a bit better. Schazjmd (talk) 16:45, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
