Question[edit]

Is there a 'ghost platform' on the forest side of the station?

Is the sentence 'The line no longer towers over the forest, but hides quietly behind the bustle of Station Road, its electric trains now transporting workers into the city rather than helping the masses to escape it.' too poetic for Wikipedia? 82.44.143.26 (talk) 18:39, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In answer to the above questions yes there is a former 4th platform located adjacent to platform 3 at Chingford which has become overgrown (possibly for services which used to run to Stratford via the Hall Farm Curve?). Secondly I agree that the phrase is too poetic for Wikipedia and perhaps ought to be rewritten (sounds like it may have come from a book on the subject) WSmith26997 (talk) 11:01, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I like the poetic nature of that phrase and it reflects the change of the lines use. Please leave.--Davidvaughanwells (talk) 21:45, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adding to "connections"[edit]

I feel that the current connections section is insufficient and perhaps ought to be expanded. I would suggest "London bus routes 97, 179, 212, 313, 379, 385, 397, 444 serve the station" as a minimum. This would put in the same style as other London rail stations some of which indeed have a lot more information but would be interested to see what the recommendations on this are. Original Layout[edit]

As a small child we sometimes used the Chingford line to get to Epping Forest. I remember that there was an area to the North of the station beyond the platforms that steam locomotives used to run round the trains. This is unusual because normally the lines don't go past the platforms of terminus stations. (This must be a legacy of the original plan to continue the line to High Beech.) I think I saw a turntable and I don't remember seeing locos running bunker first. Okay, this is anecdotal and it happened before 1960 when the line was electrified. Also we normally used the 38 bus to get to the forest so I only saw Chingford Station a couple of times. You can understand my memory is a little hazy. (That is another reason for insisting on properly referenced facts rather than imperfect recollection.) Nevertheless, I'm convinced that Chingford Station had an unusual and interesting track plan.

So far I haven't had much luck in researching this matter. I will continue looking but since I now live in New Zealand it is difficult. Maybe UK residents (particularly those living in Waltham Forest) could find it easier. OrewaTel (talk) 23:06, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
