Assessment Report[edit]

  1. Article could be expanded a bit more.
  2. Perhaps more photos could be included.

More Photos - defenetly

Expanding - no, the articles already rather big and giant compared to most articles about British Zoos.

i have added an okapi picture

[edit]

This page seems one big advertisement for an otherwise fine zoo. Also no references are listed except the zoo's home page, no doubt this article is a mere copy/paste of that. E.g. "As one of Europe's, and indeed the world's, foremost conservation-minded zoos" - that's a nice claim, but is it substantiated somewhere (other than the zoo's own page)? etc. Jalwikip 09:32, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a shame this great zoo has such a horrible article. I tagged it, but a user removed it without question. --Majorly 22:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean it has a terrible article, i see nothing wrong with it. What exactly is so terrible about it?

Compare it to another article of a similar topic. It's hideous. I've half a mind to rewrite it from scratch, if I could be bothered to. --Majorly 20:04, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree, it is an advertisment - much of the language is not what you would expect from an encylcopaedic entry. Perhaps I will have the inclination to rework it soon!  Pixie2000 (talk) 23:40, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have re-written the pages, tidied up the language and added citations. I have therefore removed the advertisment and citation templates - I hope people approve!!  Pixie2000 (talk) 21:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

oh my god it's much better now!, got pictures and all - much better.

Much better indeed, altough still lacking impartial citations in some places, e.g. "This is the zoo's largest aviary, and is one of the biggest in the UK." "one of the biggest" - says who? In these cases, I'd like to see some impartial evidence... Jalwikip 14:35, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

number of elephants[edit]

this article says their are 10 elephants at the zoo, but im not sure if its 9 or 10

Look it up then, or best remove it. Majorly (o rly?) 00:22, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is ten - I added a citation to the main page.  Pixie2000 (talk) 12:42, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sun Bears[edit]

When did the zoo confirm that they were adding the Sun Bears to the collection! and where to do get this information from anyway. Ae12079410 23:07, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

sorry deleted it by mistake, i was going to add it back but then i though why? So until it's comfirmed i think we should not add it on unless whoever added it works at Chester Zoo or something Ae12079410 23:41, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Importance Scale - Low[edit]

How can this be rated low on the imporance scale thingy when it's 1 of Britains most visited attractions and soap characters get views as High or Mid Importance Its Outrageous Ae12079410 21:36, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you feel it should be changed, then change it, and, preferably, edit the article so that it is improved! I was merely duplicating the assessment for the Cheshire project, which is what I primarily had in mind when I assessed it. It's priority is lowon that, because there are more pressing articles that need attention. We don't deal with many "soap characters" in that project.  DDStretch  (talk) 22:44, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK Maybe I Over-reacted a little bit there. And now from looking at it probably i see it is only rated as low on the Cheshire and England Projects and not on Wikipedia itself. I probably over-reacted (am i spelling over-reacted right?)because i like Chester Zoo and Adopt the Lemurs (they are sooooo cute) there. It should probably stay as low on the projects. I really should stop making such a fuss over tiny little things !Ae12079410 23:34, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Staff Section[edit]

Would it be a good or bad idea if it included a staff list?86.31.238.213 17:53, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I myself woudnt really be that interested in the staff list to be honest. So I'd say a bad idea and anyway where would you get the list from? But if you feel it is neccecarry to include it then add it if you want to? Ae12079410 21:50, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, not needed. It would probably be unverifiable, and it's unimportant anyway. Majorly (hot!) 21:54, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Is the part about the rarely seen animals really needed. It looks a bit like advertisment and should probably be deleted.

Ae12079410 20:22, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted it. Majorly (talk | meet) 20:57, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sun Bears and Devils[edit]

i have removed the following Another development is the additon of a male Sun Bear and Tasmanian devils in a Ausrallian area - can anybody prove this. until they can it staying off the article. the only animals i am aware of are addax and persian gointered gazelles.

Hello, Tasmanian devils have been discussed to be part of the zoos collection, but I've no idea when they'd arrive. Some keepers would like to see sun bears return to Chester zoo, but would not be for a while. Addax are no longer coming to Chester wiithin the next few years, and I think the gazelles are still on the list.

Updated the link for history[edit]

The history link wasn't accurate (it may have been at some stage, but was now out of date). I've also added a bit more about the history. I wish there was more available somewhere in a reliable source, as my mother knew one of the people involved in the previous zoo at Shavington: a Dr. Willy English, who was the GP for Haslington. She and her friends often used to visit "Willy English's zoo" in Shavington, and I recall her telling me from my cildhood that Chester zoo was formed in part from the animals he kept. Pity there is no easy to obtain history of this stage in a reliable and citable source.  DDStretch  (talk) 15:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if it of much "historical" value, but The Chester Council website provides some good pictures and some more detail - maybe just as a "External link"?
There also seems to be a book: Johns, J. (1969) Zoo without bars - the story of Chester Zoo. Victor Gollancz. Perhaps something to look for in a local library?  Pixie2000 (talk) 18:42, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 28 December 2011[edit]

The Meerkats have recently be joined by Aardvarks. http://www.chesterzoo.org/must-sees/zoo-news/aardvark-health-check

The Spirit of the Jaguar exhibit is to be themed around jaguar/south american cowboy cohesion and will include various species of fish; leaf-cutter ants, poison-dart frogs, sloths, agoutis and jaguars http://www.chesterzoo.org/must-sees/zoo-news/rename-jaguar-exhibit

The "Heart of Africa" expansion has been postponed due to government funding and instead the first stage is now the planned "Islands" exhibit (to begin construction in 2012). It will be a £30m expansion connected by a boat ride and will showcase the zoo's conservation work in Sumatra, Madagascar, Mascarenes, Philippines and Indonesia. It will showcase some of the zoos current species as well as new editions- Sumatran Orang-utans and tigers; Sun Bears; Malayan Tapirs; Visayan Warty Pigs and Babirusa; Komodo Dragons; Philippine Crocodiles and Spotted Deer; hornbills and various species of lemurs, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. The expansion will also include educational areas, play areas, restaurants and island village themed kiosks http://www.chesterzoo.org/global/press-and-media/press-releases/Islands%20plan Jdrabamann (talk) 23:29, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please be more specific about what needs to be changed. --Bryce (talk | contribs) 14:45, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done (not necessarily by me) I just fixed the Future issue (see the request below this), and updated and cited the Jaguar exhibit. Someone else slipped the Aardvarks into the meerkat enclosure already. Don Lammers (talk) 12:27, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 7 August 2012[edit]

Please can the Future Developments section be replaced as nearly all of the information is now out of date. The most current information is found here: http://www.chesterzoo.org/global/about-us/natural-vision

Suggest the following copy could be used: "The first phase of the Natural Vision project is 'Islands' and will feature the habitats and diverse ecosystems of Madagascar, Mauritius, Sumatra and other South East Asian island groups. The exhibit is scheduled to open in 2015." Sh cz (talk) 12:29, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not done:The suggested edit appears to be a copyvio. Anyway, you should use independent sources. Mdann52 (talk) 18:47, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done The suggested edit may be a copyvio (I did not read the zoo press releases), but there is information from BBC covering this exhibit. I have moved most of the stuff about the original plans to the History section, rewritten, and cited it. Then I rewrote the Future section based on the BBC article, and cited it, hopefully avoiding copyvio issues. This also answers to the independent sources issue, though personally I think the zoo would be a more reliable source on what it plans than a a third party report based on a press release. Don Lammers (talk) 00:44, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Species and animals section, edit request[edit]

Could someone with the necessary priveledges add a link to Breed registry for the word studbook in the first paragraph here? At the moment it's not really clear what this means (I had to google it). Also isn't this the sort of information that would need a source? TZHX (talk) 21:20, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Animal Exhibits section - Islands in Danger, edit request[edit]

Please can someone edit the sentence below:

The crocodile pools (which formerly housed West African Dwarf Crocodiles, American Alligators and Philippine crocodiles) are currently empty.

To read:

The crocodile pools (which formerly housed West African Dwarf Crocodiles, American Alligators and Philippine crocodiles) currently house Caiman crocodiles. Sh cz (talk) 10:31, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have unprotected the article, so you can do it yourself. JamesBWatson (talk) 22:41, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done Many thanks, I've made the edit --Sh cz (talk) 09:01, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Push for GA[edit]

I'm interested in trying to push this article towards being eligible for a GA nomination. There are a few things I think need sorting if this is to happen.

  1. Improving the history section
  2. Improving sources for species listed
  3. Adding new updated images.

If any other editors want to help with a roadmap to improve this article feel free to chime in. -- PaleoMatt (talk) 16:55, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request[edit]

Section: Management structure. Statement: The zoo employs over 650 permanent staff, increasing to over 1,000 during the main summer period, making it the largest zoo in the UK. When searching for largest zoo in the UK, Chester Zoo is presented high in the results as a result of this statement resulting in confusion for those wishing to identify 'largest zoo in the UK' in relation to size, as in acreage, number of species. Perhaps a suitable edit can be decided so as to remove this clash when searching for the largest zoo in the UK. Thank-you. Georgekearse (talk) 11:09, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
