Requested move 27 July 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Not moved per strong consensus. (Although, personally, I find the proposal eminently sensible and I wish more people would substantially engage with its reasoning rather than posting a knee-jerk oppose). No such user (talk) 13:26, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CheddarCheddar (disambiguation) – The primary topic for "cheddar" seems to me to be cheddar cheese. I have not heard of the village Cheddar, Somerset prior to finding it here, and it seems to be a small town. However, I do think that "cheddar cheese" is properly named, so if this is moved, I would propose a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT to the cheese. Note: there was a prior discussion about the PT in 2014. • Oppose - OP hasn't provided any objective rationale for this primary claim ("seems to me" is very subjective and inadequate). The topics are very cleanly naturally disambiguated, and the alternative will only lead to future internal wikilink mistakes - a real problem for readers and editors alike. -- Netoholic @ 08:03, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - verbatim as Netoholic: OP hasn't provided any objective rationale for this primary claim + topics are very cleanly naturally disambiguated, and the alternative will only lead to future internal wikilink mistakes . In ictu oculi (talk) 11:55, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Views for the village are not so far below the cheese that there is an obvious primary topic. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:01, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have statistics for this claim? Per pageviews, cheddar cheese is viewed 6x more than the village. I don't know how to track click-through data, but I would suspect that most click-through from landing at the "Cheddar" disambiguation page goes to the cheese. • Speedy SNOW close - if there ever is going to be a successful move request, it's going to have to rely on more than a WP:NOTWHATFIRSTCOMESTOMIND rationale like "seems to me" Red Slash 17:40, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Leaving aside Cheddar, Somerset vs Cheddar Cheese, there's also Cheddar (TV channel) which gets similar page views last 30 days as the town, so no clear primary redirect. Skynxnex (talk) 21:24, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Per a previous RM, the town is obscure enough that some people have to look through pages and pages of search results before encountering that as a candidate, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who had no idea there is a town called Cheddar despite being very familiar with the existence of a cheese called Cheddar. I now half-expect someone to try to tell me that Colby, Gorgonzola, Gruyère, Roquefort, and Stilton are the names of towns. — BarrelProof (talk) 23:15, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And you would be right! Colby, Wisconsin, Gorgonzola, Milan, Gruyères, Roquefort-sur-Soulzon, Stilton. Natg 19 (talk) 23:40, 28 July 2022 (UTC)([reply]
