move to Charles Barraud[edit]

It looks as if a mistake has been made here. The man is known as either C D Barraud or Charles Decimus Barraud. The change should be reverted. Why was it thought the name should be truncated? Eddaido (talk) 08:34, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Charles BarraudCharles Decimus Barraud – An editor protests against the earlier move from Charles Decimus Barraud and requests that the name be changed back, stating that the man is known either by his full name or by his initials. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 23:03, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. There is no need for disambiguation beyond the general format of <First name> <Last name> as given in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 23:03, 7 June 2014 (UTC) I withdraw my opposition in light of the evidence given by Eustachiusz. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 17:01, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I created with page with the original name as part of a bulk article creation drive using DNZB data. Longer names were preferred over short ones because they had fewer clashes with existing articles and made the semi-automated drive run faster. Quite a few have since been renamed in one way or another. I'm happy either way. Stuartyeates (talk) 23:24, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I agree with Stuart. You can argue the name thing both ways and if you have good advocacy skills (or a talent for steamrollering) you will win the argument. And provided the "less-favoured" name is created as a "redirect", and so gets you to the same page, I don't see that the reader suffers either way, whoever "wins". In this case, someone already found us a good source early on which can be summarized to produce a very nice coherent little entry. Something that folks will wish to read, and which, their having read it, will leave them knowing stuff they didn't know before. And then other sources may be found to fill any gaps and otherwise improve the entry further. If your time is limited (and whose is not?) then please devote it to creating the entry, if Charles (Decimus) Barraud is your interest. I just read what I wrote and I do sound like a right sanctimonious git. Ach, well, I've written it now. Have a good day. Charles01 (talk) 06:46, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - fr:Charles Barraud (I'll translate and add the article when time permits) is a different painter from Charles Decimus Barraud, who is always distinguished commercially and academically by the use of his middle name - see [1], [2], [3], [4] etc. Eustachiusz (talk) 10:14, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Ok, you convinced me with all your on-line citations, Eustachiusz. We should change the New Zealand painter-apothecary back to Charles Decimus Barraud in order to reduce the scope for confusion with the Swiss gentleman (on whom I await with interest your planned anglophone expanded version). Success Charles01 (talk) 14:56, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've boldly moved the page back, as I needed the new name for the Swiss painter. I hope this is acceptable. Eustachiusz (talk) 00:41, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
