Inclusion Criteria

I've noticed a lot of other character lists doing this as well. Given the messy state this article's been in, I feel as though figuring out inclusion criteria for the characters would be beneficial for the article long term. Even if the list we've currently got is much cleaner, setting up future inclusion criteria will help make this list far less messy as new games in the series release. I'm not sure if there's a more formal way of going about this than just suggesting it in the article's talk page, but if there is, please let me know.

I'm going to go about this by separate character categories, as described in the article.

Major Characters:

Given how Kirby as a series tends to frequently reference its characters by cameos and such, I feel the most effective way of listing characters is in terms of proper appearances. Given how the cast tends to rotate by the game outside of a select few, I feel major characters should be included if they have had at least three major appearances in the series. Major appearances should be defined as the character having had a major role in the game itself, whether it be as an important NPC (Such as, for instance, Magolor acting as a shopkeeper in the Kirby Clash series, or Meta Knight playing an active role in Kirby Squeak Squad's plot, among other games.) Another example can include being a playable character in a number of installments, such as the Animal Friends appearing as playable characters in Kirby's Dream Land 2, 3, and Star Allies.

Examples of characters already included that meet this criteria include Taranza and Galacta Knight. Both have had at least three major roles in the series (For Taranza, Triple Deluxe, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, and Star Allies, and for Galacta Knight, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby Planet Robobot, and Super Kirby Clash, as examples.)

Examples of characters who currently would not meet this criteria include Ribbon and the Three Mage Sisters. Ribbon was a major supporting character in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and was playable with Adeleine in Star Allies, but outside of those roles, has only cameod throughout the series. Similarly, the Mage Sisters have only really had a major role in Star Allies' plot, and not anywhere else so far.

Major exceptions to this are if the character is notable in media outside Kirby while being a major recurring character in the series itself. One example is Nightmare, who appeared only as an antagonist in Kirby's Adventure and its remake. However, he has frequent major appearances in outside media, such as Super Smash Bros. and the anime, and has a Parallel counterpart in Super Kirby Clash. Similarly, while Marx only has two major roles in the series, (Kirby Super Star and Star Allies, his Mass Attack role is a bit debateable) he does appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a major boss character, which is generally notable.

This would obviously be divided among either Main Antagonists or Supporting Characters where applicable.

Enemies:

Given how generic enemies tend to frequently recur in the series more than major characters, the list should be trimmed down to just enemies that have a major role outside of appearing as an enemy. Examples of this include having major supporting roles outside of being an opponent, which includes appearances in things such as the anime as well. I honestly think the current list works out for this category, as all of those listed work under this criteria. (Waddle Dees are frequent NPC characters throughout the series, Waddle Doo has had NPC roles, been playable in several games, and is a supporting character in the anime, Sword and Blade Knight have a major recurring role in the anime, as do the Cappies.)

Examples that would not apply under this rule would, for instance, Chilly. Chilly did make a major appearance in the anime, but only for one episode, which doesn't make him as relevant as say, Sword or Blade Knight, due to the fact the latter two frequently appear and are the focus of multiple episodes. Similarly, in the games themselves, characters such as, for instance, Capillers, appear in minigames, not as enemies, but they are still serving as basic obstacles and not as individual characters.

Bosses:

This one is much easier to categorize, given that most of Kirby's boss enemies don't tend to recur. The boss in question should have appeared repeatedly throughout the series, at least three times, while also having a major role outside of being a boss. Whispy Woods, for instance, has appeared in some capacity in a majority of the games in the series, and has also acted as a major side character in the anime, as well as appearing as a major element in two stages in the Super Smash Bros. series. Lololo and Lalala and Chef Kawasaki, while not as recurring as Whispy Woods, both have major anime roles, and Kawasaki has a Smash appearance as well.

Examples of characters who do not meet this criteria include characters like Kracko. Kracko has appeared many times throughout the series as a boss enemy, but he never has a major plot role, and he was also a one off character in the anime, which is not generally as notable as a recurring supporting character like in Whispy or Kawasaki's case. Another example is Landia, who, despite appearing on three separate occasions, is not notable outside of the plot of one game.

Anime Characters:

As the series tends to have a recurring cast, the characters in question should have a major role in a vast majority of episodes if they are an anime exclusive addition. I'm not quite familiar with the anime, so I'm not sure what a good minimum episode requirement would be. Given the smaller pool of characters here, I'm fairly certain this one won't need as much curation, especially given that the anime is no longer ongoing.

I've added a lot more elaboration than there needs to be solely for the sake of properly outlining what I mean by each of these proposed criteria. This is just a suggestion, so it's not meant to be taken as fact unless people act upon these criteria and choose to make it official. I feel as though it could do with some revision first, but this is just my two cents on this article, as I really want to get rid of all those warnings up at the top of the page. I think that would be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion, I support making this official. QuicoleJR (talk) 00:10, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Although, there should be an exception if a character meets GNG and has their own article. QuicoleJR (talk) 00:14, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Right now, all three characters with articles already meet the proposed criteria, but I agree that if something happens in the future that calls for what you're describing, they should definitely be on the list. (List of Mario characters did something similar, given characters like Vivian and Fawful are listed due to their articles.) Pokelego999 (talk) 18:55, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
I feel that, since the anime characters are only in the anime, we should just delete that list of characters and change redirect targets to the anime itself. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 02:36, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure about that, unless a "characters" section is put on the anime page. I feel like some of the more important ones need to be discussed somewhere. QuicoleJR (talk) 02:54, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
But there is a section. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 04:29, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Oh, OK, I'm good with that. QuicoleJR (talk) 13:17, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Given the fact that there is a section that covers most of the basic major anime exclusive characters on the main anime article (Only ones on this article not discussed there are Tokkori and Blustergas, with the latter being a debateable inclusion) I also support merging the RBAY characters into the main anime article, though for the List of Kirby Characters article, we should probably link to the section in the anime's article somewhere if people are curious about the anime characters. Pokelego999 (talk) 18:59, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Maybe a hatnote? QuicoleJR (talk) 20:17, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I think that would work. Pokelego999 (talk) 21:36, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
@Pokelego999 and Cukie Gherkin: I went ahead and removed the section. QuicoleJR (talk) 15:28, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Excellent, that's good to hear. Pokelego999 (talk) 04:34, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
