Questions about the United States section[edit]

1. It says "In the United States, certification is handled by each state's Board of Education, and requirements vary from state to state. Normally, a bachelor's degree with a major in a certifiable area (English/language arts, fine arts, science, math, etc.) is a minimum requirement." For clarity, should "elementary education" be added to this list, to show that a "certifiable area" need not be a content area? How about "secondary education" -- or is that degree no longer valid by itself in any state?

2. It says "Until the 1960s, a person could not teach unless he or she had completed a year or more of specific teaching training at a normal school. In the past two decades, normal school courses have been made optional through the promotion of Alternate Route teacher certification." That leaves a big 25-year gap between the 1960s and 1990. Was a degree in education from a university the exclusive possibility during those years?

3. Are the requirements different for teaching in elementary school vs. secondary school?

4. It says "Teachers in almost all states must ... complete either a content-based or teaching-based Master's degree within a stated number of years." Is that really true, or is the master's degree simply a route to getting a raise without being a requirement?

5. Aside from a citation to the rankings of education schools, this section has no sources -- I think it really needs them.

6. It would be nice to have a table comparing the states' requirements. Duoduoduo (talk) 20:47, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
