Birth year?[edit]

I just changed her birth year to 1925 from 1928, but there does seem to be some disagreement about which is corerct. The official website lists 1925 which is what I have gone by. --[[ User:Wspencer11|Wspencer11]] (talk to me...) 15:01, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Armenian composer[edit]

She used Armenian folk songs to compose music and she is of Armenian origin. That makes her an Armenian composer. VartanM 23:19, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that would be a generally accepted view. She was certainly of Armenian origin, so she could be called an Armenian-American composer. But she was born in the USA, had US citizenship, and whatever languages she used to compose certain things in have no bearing on anything. I disagree with showing the Armenian orthography of her name. This would be appropriate if she started out life in Armenia, migrated to the US, and had to convert her name to one spelled in the Latin alphabet. But she was always Berberian from day 1, she was never Կատրին Անահիտ Բերբերյան. Maybe Armenians spell her name that way, and that’s fine for them. But this article is for English speakers. -- JackofOz (talk) 09:33, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cause of death[edit]

What caused Berberian to die so young? The hush around her death suggests she took her own life, but maybe someone could add something reliable to the article. 84.109.239.32 (talk) 17:24, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If I recall correctly, she died of a heart attack. I'll try to find a reliable source that says that. Wikipedia is not censored, so omission of crucial information like that is usually an indication that no-one has bothered to write it in the article yet. Graham87 06:54, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the information, plus a reference for it. I've also expanded the article slightly with information from The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music. Voceditenore (talk) 07:52, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's one of the best sources I could find for the heart attack info as well. It's the only one that said "apparent"; the others found in this Google News Archive search seemed more definite. Graham87 09:20, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The long passage concerning her death focuses extensively on what - at least in this version - is "uneventful". Wouldn't it be better to simply give the date and cause of death? 82.224.103.123 (talk) 17:32, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Voice Type[edit]

From her voice, it is more fitting to call Cathy Berberian a Mezzo-Soprano. Also, http://cathyberberian.com/biography/ refer this. "In 1949, Cathy journeyed again abroad, this time to the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan and received vocal training from Giorgina del Vigo. Her studies with Del Vigo were a turning point, for under her tutelage Berberian retrained her voice as a mezzo-soprano and discovered a vast repertoire of chamber music that highlighted the multi-faceted qualities and texture of her voice." She had a crazy range, but the texture and tessitura of her voice is more fitting to be termed a mezzo-soprano. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Astropurni (talkcontribs) 12:32, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
