Terminology[edit]

Whether a particular instrument is called a borescope or an endoscope is up to the manufacturer, not what it is used for, nor what its diameter is. Some of the best mechanical-use scopes are called endoscopes.

I have met people who would limit the term "borescope" to relatively small diameter instruments, such as those used to inspect the bore of a rifle.

A boroscope is purely optical in design function. The typically means a multi-stranded fiber optic cable or a hollow tube. An endoscope is a camera on the end of some cable like assembly coupled with a display device. Early boroscopes were literally straight tubes with lenses near the ends similar in construction to a refractor type telescope hence the term "bore..." These have been around for over a century. The terminology is somewhat flexible, but in general, a borescope is used for technical purposes, while endoscopes are for medical use. This is regardless of construction. --Janke | Talk 08:43, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
