Dark Forces

On the discussion page for the Star Wars computer game Dark Forces, it states that Blue Harvest incorporates music from the game into the episode. Can anyone confirm this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.158.139 (talk) 06:17, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Violations

I removed the link cause it is a violation of copyright, Twenty Century Fox has demanded all sites showing this video.--Mariocossio 18:48, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

To all the users who are editing this page, a bit ago, i asked an admin to delete the pictures taken from the video posted on youtube of this episode, don't put new ones until Fox releases them or the episode aires, because the video from which this pictures are taken is illegal and thus all derivatives from it are also...I understand that you want to ilustrate this episode (i believe it will be one of the bests of the show) but in wikipedia we follow the rules and the copyright laws. Thanks.--Mariocossio 22:31, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Actually, Fox's wishes have nothing to do with the legality of the pictures. The only way wikipedia can use them is under fair use, and you most certainly don't need permission from the rights holder to make a fair use defense. If it would be legal to post without permission from Fox after it has aired, it's legal now. This is not legal advice, consult your own attorney before doing anything, etc, etc.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.19.251.172 (talkcontribs)

We could certainly summarize the scenes in the video ... other FG articles already have made reference to it. Daniel Case 02:14, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

List to prose tag

The cultural references section needs to flow in nice and smooth paragraphs, not choppy PowerPoint tidbits. I can make these changes but prefer to hold off another day so as to not get into edit conflicts with others. Cromulent Kwyjibo 23:25, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I might give it a shot tonight. It would be lovely if we could make this article an example of how to do this sort of thing as a prose section. Daniel Case 02:06, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Errors

Pointing out the unrealistic operation of R2-D2's handgun doesn't seem worthwhile in an episode where Han Solo rides through space on the outside of the Millennium Falcon with the door open. Hackaday 07:56, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

That's a perfect example of the sort of "indiscriminate information" that will go by the boards once we prosify the lists. Daniel Case 16:51, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Notes

The "Notes" section is a thinly veiled trivia list. Any relevant information should probably be redistributed throughout the rest of the article. Aml830 13:40, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

This will be taken care of by prosification. As new additions to the article start to slow, the time is becoming ripe. Daniel Case 14:35, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Air America (film) refrence?

The scene with a rebel trooper pretending to shoot down the Falcon appears to be a reference to a scene with a Laotian solder pretending to shoot down an Air America airplane in the film. Can anyone confirm this? Generalleoff 07:25, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Someone put in that it has something to do with a character from Kids in the Hall. In any event, unless some reliable source explains that this was the intent, it shouldn't be in the article at all. Too trivial. Daniel Case 15:01, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

This would need a comment from the writers or producers, so probably no. Also, this is way trivial; one even gets the joke without knowing this refers to Space Balls. I suggest simply removing it as unencyclopedic. / edg 00:09, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
While it is a bit subtle, its a good thing to make a note of, especially since Spaceballs has so much influence on this episode. --Otheus (talk) 02:59, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Only one hour episode?

Is this episode the only hour-long (with commercials) episode in Family Guy history, or is there another hour long episode? The Chronic 04:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

its the only one in existence so far. although if there are more star wars episodes down the line those could potentially be hour longs as well. Also, there were a couple of previous two part episodes, but in each of those prior cases they were both two individual episodes, unlike this which was just one long one. Grande13

Bullet Points

Okay, I'm getting tired of this &%@&. Keep the bullet points for the cultural reference and note sections and, yes, the trivia sections. It just doesn't make sence to me that we have to make a paragraph out of the references. I just don't get it. They usally don't have anything to do with each other, so why try to make a paragraph out of them? I know, I know, "this is an encyclopedia," but why use those types of guidelines for a comedy TV show. Chances are, people who read these articals arn't looking for an encyclopedia-like article; they're looking for an up-to-date, acurate, clean, and easy to read articles about a show with a talking dog and a baby who can bloody TALK!!! These articals are about a show that has a talking dog &%$@%&$ human women and a gay talking baby that is trying to rule the world and kill his mom! I get that some of the guidelines are important, but there is a notice that the plot for this epidode is to long. What the &@%&! Censorship is a bit strong. The episode had to fit into a proscribed time format. FCC regulations, thanks to the Super Bowl "wardrobe failure", will heavily fine tv networks for inappropriate whatever. So if it is censorship, it's self-censorship based on the court-recognized 'obscenity' exception to the First Amendment. I would note that the Bush/Cheney bumper sticker didn't get excised. --Otheus (talk) 02:57, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

iTunes-compatible digital file

You can legally rip the DVD to your computer and iPod using iTunes. I find it odd that there is no mention of it already in the article and ask about it before I add it myself. Today Jim Gianopulos, Chairman & CEO of Fox, came out on stage during the MacWorld 2008 Steve Jobs Keynote and talks about it. Here is a link to the video of the keynote, http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/f27853y2/event/index.html?internal=fj2l3s9dm . Also here is a news article that talks about it, dated January 8, 2008, http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/fox-dvd-ships-with-itunes-compatible-digital-file/12358 - DidYouLoseASock (talk) 00:31, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

See "RIAA v. Diamond Multimedia" The consumer has an explicit legal right to make private non-commercial copies. So, I can legally rip the DVD to my computer and anywhere else I please anyway. This "feature" restricts the quality and limits where it can be played, and hence is more DRM than feature Damncrackmonkey (talk) 22:22, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

It should be worth noting that you can also do the exact same thing with any Windows PlaysForSure device/system, or even just on to your personal computer. A window pops up on your computer when you insert the disc (at least under Windows it does) and presents you with the option of either (WMP or iTunes). Also, I find the reference to the trouble with the iTunes Digital Copy to be rather superfluous and more suited to an article specifically about "iTunes Digital Copy." josejuan05 http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/4644/fox-s_family_guy

Episode Runtime

I was just wondering how long does the episode go for? Is it just a normal half hour? --MattyC3350 (talk) 07:02, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

No, it's a full hour with commercials. Immblueversion (talk) 12:41, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Aha, not an hour after all! We need an exact length in minutes - runtime doesn't include advertising. Leushenko (talk) 00:38, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Of course commercials don't count. Likewise when we are speaking of movie lengths we don't count the trailers that start before the movie. TheBlazikenMaster (talk) 01:05, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

The "1-15-08 Update"

There was some kind of "update" under the list of references saying there was no preview for "Something, Something, Something Dark Side" included on the DVD. That doesn't seem possible, because I saw a preview on Youtube, and it seemed too efficient to be fake. Maybe someone expected an actual preview, but the DVD description called this feature a "teaser" rather than an actual "preview." Maybe I'm mistaken, but someone should look into it (I don't have the DVD as of this time). Immblueversion (talk) 12:40, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Adding more members to the cast list

In this episode there is a Stormtrooper who, after hearing a noise Obi-Wan presumably made and thinking it's probably just another drill, talks about how he once was about to finally "bone [his] girlfriend" (don't balme me for the offensive term; this is what he actually said), then hearing that there was this drill and saying his girlfriend told him that "there was no way." This character sounds exactly like the interviewee in the episode "Boys Do Cry" who claimed to have seen Bigfoot. I'm not sure about this, but I found some websites that claim his name is "RJ." Do you suppose we should put him under "minor characters" on the cast list? Also, should we add Al Harrington, the guy from that annoying commercial, to the list as "Darth Harrington?" And should we also put the Evil Monkey, who appeared in the background of the cantina scene, up as himself as well? Immblueversion (talk) 21:46, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Nod to Mel Brooks movie "Blazing Saddles"?

When Chris's Luke Skywalker character mentions John Williams, and the camera cuts right to the orchestra there on the set, it reminded me very much of the scene in Mel Brooks' comedy movie "Blazing Saddles" in which Cleavon Little's character is riding on horseback alone through the desert to accompanying background music, and he rides right past the Count Basis Orchestra on a stage playing that music, out where you would never expect to see them.

The similarity in the two scenes is so strong that I am inclined to believe that one of the writers for "Blue Harvest" 'borrowed' the idea of a live orchestra on a movie set from the Brooks movie, and that's OK as far as I am concerned.

Just an aside, when Peter is talking about the 'lessons learned' from the story, he mentions the genius of retaining marketing rights, or something. This is essentially Yoghurt's notion in Mel Brook's Spaceballs. Casting Stewie as Vader was not only natural, but played to the anti-stereotype of the villain being neither tall nor imposing, as did Brook's casting of Rick Moranis as "Dark Helmut". --Otheus (talk) 02:52, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Removed trivia/cultural reference

Dave Navarro was referenced in the episode, and as a result, he included the clip on his official website. [1]

While doing a drive-by edit of this article, I found this line uncomfortably wedged in at the top of the Cultural References section. It didn't seem appropriate for any of the subsections of the CR section, and may be a bit too 'trivia'-ish for the article, so I cut it out and put it here for those with greater involvement to decide on its fate. -- saberwyn 03:55, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Not quite right about the doctor who reference

The image you show does not really indicate what they were trying to do with the piss-take on Dr who. Is it just me or is this article excessively lengthy? The 'cultural references' and similar sections are all extremely long (and mostly unsourced/trivial). Blue Harvest (Family Guy)Blue Harvest — The DVD and special are both exceptionally popular, and if you asked the average person on the street what it means, they'll say "it's that Family Guy thing, right?" Keeping the actual Star Wars subject at Blue Harvest is clearly for the sake of fans only, as you actually have to have researched the subject or read about it three decades ago to have any understanding about it. --The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! • Comment how about just turning "Blue Harvest" into a dab page? 76.66.194.220 (talk) 05:13, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Exceptionally popular in this present decade. Admittedly WP:CRYSTAL, but as a general rule the first notable instance of something is considered the most notable instance of something. For example, the 1939 film of The Wizard of Oz is today more famous than the book, but the book still "has dibs" on the title. (However, since in this case the book is called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wizard of Oz is a disambiguation page.) — The Man in Question (in question) 21:14, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
    • Those are poor comparisons. The Wizard of Oz is a famous book and movie; Blue Harvest is a famous special [maybe not famous, but whatever]. It is not famous for being a fake name, and is only of interest to the hardcoriest of Star Wars fans. Tell me - even if Blue Harvest as a Family Guy special is only important for this decade, what does it matter since Blue Harvest as a fake name was never even remotely close to its fame? - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 05:47, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
  • Oppose. While I agree with you regarding the popularity of the Family Guy's Blue Harvest I would argue that the spirit of The Man in Question's comment still rings true. Since Blue Harvest was the working title of Return (or Revenge) of the Jedi there is meaning. If the working title had been different then Family Guy would more than likely not have named themselves Blue Harvest. Family Guy's Blue Harvest title therefore derives its meaning and origin from Blue Harvest making Blue Harvest significant. Similarly The Wizard of Oz derives its origin from the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz therefore its article title is given preference. The Nominator even states in his arguement that Blue Harvest is most commonly connected with Family Guy, therefore keeping the title as it is now makes sense. Snump (talk) 01:49, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
    • I don't think being the inspiration makes it equally known; If the creators weren't Star Wars fans, it would be somewhat noteworthy, but it's Star Wars fans making a Star Wars reference. And if it were most commonly connected to Family Guy, wouldn't that mean that adding such a disambig considering the circumstances would be redundant since it's obvious to most people that it's Family Guy without saying it in the title. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! I believe this article needs a major rewrite. In this Family Guy episode there are many jokes and parodies. However the article is written as if it is another retelling of Star Wars Episode IV. One thing to be included was the 4th Doctor's entrance theme when the Millenium Falcon enters hyperspace. The are also many other parodies and references that need to be added to the main body of the article.176.24.6.228 (talk) 15:11, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

For the most part it is a retelling. We shouldn't be mentioning pop culture references unless reliable sources have taken note of them. FG episodes have dozens of pop culture references, so it's necessary to establish significance. Additionally, we should avoid bloating the plot summary in favor of adding real-world content about the episode. You may wish to review MOS:TV. DonIago (talk) 15:26, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Comments

  • There are some link issues
  • I'm not sure how long the episode was (perhaps add the length to the infobox), but the plot summary is too lengthy. For instance, is it really necessary to include C-3PO getting high off the marijuana R2-D2 had given him earlier?
  • "Peter decides to retell the story of A New Hope" -> Peter decides to retell the story of Star Wars: A New Hope
  • Are you sure Moving Picture Experts Group is the right link for MPEG?
  • "The Rebel fighters attack the Death Star, but, they suffer heavy losses during the assault" - improper use of comma
  • The production section needs a copy edit. See for example, "Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane explains that the reason they made a complete parody out Star Wars in particular was because everyone in their staff loved the films and were excited to do this project. Another reason Star Wars was chosen, was because Lucasfilm allowed them to create it." I suggest you carefully go through it again or get someone from the GOCE to go through it
  • "The episode was written by Alec Sulkin, who has been with the show since the fourth season. It was directed by series veteran Dominic Polcino, who has been directing for the series since its first season." - much of this infromation is not covered in the source
  • "MacFarlane stated that while they thought of doing an Indiana Jones or a Wrath of Khan parody, they could not, because they would not get permission from owners of those properties (in this case Paramount Pictures) " - this isn't really true. Rather, MacFarlane says, "I can't imagine in a billion years that Paramount would give us permission." It would be better if you said that MacFarlane assumed they would be unable to gain permission
  • There's more you can pull from that interview, such as the part about Stewie not looking like Darth Vader
  • Beware of overlinking
  • "Blue Harvest" contains many references to the popular culture. The episode contains a lot of Star Wars related references - redundant. Try: "Blue Harvest" contains many references to popular culture, particularly to the first Star Wars film, or something similar
  • When Peter is about to being - begin?
  • the film Gia(which Jolie acted in) - space needed
  • Some helpful links that could help improve article - [3] [4][5]

I stopped in the cultural references section, which also needs a lot of work. I was thinking about failing this on account of its poor prose, but I'll place it on hold if you feel you can improve it within a week's time. I'll complete the review after you've responded here. Thanks. Ruby 2010/2013 19:12, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

More comments
  • Archive footage of Leslie Nielsen's role in the movie Airplane! was used to voice Nielsen's character, who makes a short appearance in the episode. - source? I would probably just delete it, since you mention in the cultural refs section anyway
Removed.
  • the "liberal galactic media is saying that they are saying that the planet Hoth is melting - is that really what he said? he says "saying" twice?
Fixed.
  • "ribald but often hilarious satire of fantasy favorite" - is that all there is to the quote? It seems short and abrupt. Do they mean a fantasy favorite?
That is the whole quote.
  • What makes this a reliable source?
Removed.
  • You reference two IGN reviews but only provide one citation
Added.
  • "MacFarlane stated that if the episode did well and Lucasfilm was satisfied they would work on making a sequel." - source?
Removed.

Alright fixed your new concerns added two of the links that you suggested. Any other specific concerns I may address. Pedro J. the rookie 01:56, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Yet more comments
  • Add more production info to lead (i.e. MacFarlane was a huge fan etc.)
  • The lead could also a brief mention of the cultural references section, considered this section takes up such a large portion of the article
  • Article needs ratings info Ruby 2010/2013 19:10, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
I believe I fixed those concerns. Pedro J. the rookie 19:34, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. I and another editor question the reliability of YourEntertainmentNow.com. Please find an alternative source for the ratings. Ruby 2010/2013 02:04, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
I've looked in most spots were these ratings are found and I didn't find anything. For example I checked the TV by the Numbers page for the date of the episode and it was not marked. Pedro J. the rookie 20:54, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
FWIW, I did a search of my own yesterday and could not find ratings for the episode at all, anywhere. Even the usual go-to places came up empty. Wizardman 23:14, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
A search on Highbeam came up with: <ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-169824173.html|title=Sunday football gives big kick to Fox, NBC|last=Kissell|first=Rick|date=September 26, 2007|work=[[Daily Variety]]|accessdate=November 23, 2012}} {{Subscription needed}}</ref> See for example: (there's more)

...Fox's one-hour season premiere of "Family Guy" (5.6/13, 10.81m)....
Football game was the highest-rated primetime telecast on any net. since the "American Idol" finale on Fox last May, while "Family Guy" had its best numbers since May 2005 with a "Star Wars"-themed episode.
Combined, football on NBC and "Family Guy" on Fox drew 48% of the male 18-34 audience during Sunday's 9 o'clock hour.

Just out of curiosity, if a comma needs to be erased, or a space added, why not just do it? Wouldn't it be more efficient than telling someone else to do it? Ileanadu (talk) 17:03, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

The Only Other Chick in the Galaxy

–How could you leave out the appearance of Mon Mothma and Peter's quip about "the only other chick in the galaxy." This is a reference to valid criticisms of the original film's lack of female characters. Ileanadu (talk) 17:10, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Oops! Wrong episode. Ileanadu (talk) 17:24, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
