Feminism

Could someone please specify what kind of feminism the group espouses (liberal, radical, pro-sex, anti-sex) ? Because this is only mentioned briefly and the only longer description is the reference to the NOFX song - which doesn't give their side. Anyone know? Crito2161 02:18, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I dont know anything about NOFx, but the feminism everyone mentions is simply a "sick of it" type thing. Bikini Kill protest rape and incest and the all around degradation of women in general. It's not pro- or anti- sex, but anti taking advantage of the deep emotional feelings women tack on to their sexual relationships. Their music is also meant to encourage bonds between women in their mutual understanding of glass ceilings and double standards. Etymology of the Band Name

Just curious, is there any connection with the band's name to the infamous "Bikini Killer" serial killer Charles Sobhraj? And if so, is it worth noting in the article as a small tidbit?

"Related Bands"

I removed the "Related Bands" section from this article. It simply listed band members' current and past relationships with other notable musicians. The individual pages for the band members already contain this information. In isolation, this information isn't relevant to the band as a whole. Additionally, most of this information was unsourced and some of it was incorrect. Shrilldrella (talk) 18:30, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Awkward sentence

Bikini Kill toured in London, England to begin working with Huggy Bear, releasing a joint recording together and touring the UK.. I don't think they "toured in London, England". Even given London's size, that would've been a pretty lame tour. The sentence in general is very badly written.VolunteerMarek 00:29, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

FEATURED ARTICLE PUSHHHHH Check list of what needs to be improved?

It'd be nice if anyone could list anything specific kind of gaps to aim to fill that needs researching, if know anyway?

I noted one problem with just plain ol' grammar and style which needs to be fixed and there's a bunch more in the article. The article is also quite short and just generally needs expandin', as well as some more "high quality sources" - which is what the reviewers look for. Tracking down some free images to include would also be nice.

In terms of actual content, the first thing that springs to mind is that they were sometimes wary of being associated too closely with the Riot Grrrl thing - of course they were supportive but they felt that BK was just their band and they disliked being turned into "spokespersons" for the movement. I'm sure one can find some sources on that, though here, I'm just remembering stuff from 15+ years ago.VolunteerMarek 00:46, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Women in Green mini-review

I'm providing a quick 20-minute assessment of this article against GA criteria, as requested during the Women in Green October 2022 GA editathon. These comments are meant to help identify any critical improvements still needed before any editor attempts a formal GA nomination of "Bikini Kill". Overall, the writing looks reasonably solid, the article seems both neutral and stable (no edit wars), and the included photos are all properly tagged and licensed. However, I see two things that need improvement:

• Earwig's Copyvio Detector has flagged multiple potential copyright violations in relation to this article. This either means that the Wikipedia text has plagiarized other sources, or that other sources have copied broad sections of the Wikipedia article (perhaps without proper attribution). A GA reviewer will want this cleared up. There are a couple possible solutions: (1) If you can establish that the other source has copied the Wikipedia article (e.g., by comparing publication dates and past article versions), then you can tag the Wikipedia article's talk page with a backwards copy template to declare this. (2) Alternatively, you can rewrite, rephrase and restructure parts of the Wikipedia article text so that it no longer matches up with the wording of the flagged sources.
• Coverage should be broader (article needs expansion). It currently covers basic facts (band's origin, breakup, reunions, discography), but I'm seeing gaps around deeper questions of the band's musical style, philosophy, and/or legacy and influence on other musicians. If Bikini Kill really was a "pioneer" in the riot grrrl movement, there should be more information and cited sources to back this up. Here are a few questions I have about the band: What was the inspiration behind Bikini Kill's creation? What was their musical style like? Was the band involved in supporting any political causes? Any reason for Bikini Kill's breakup in 1997? Did other musicians see them as "pioneers"? Did Bikini Kill influence other riot grrrl/rock/feminist musicians in the years following? You may find other pertinent info as you dig up the answers to these questions.
