Concerning the origin of the term Battle royale

So, it seems that this article states that the film Battle Royal released in 2000 is the origin of the name of this genre of game, but there are no references to this whatsoever and, indeed, the term battle royale has been used in the context of a free for all since...well technically centuries but in the context of a video game since the 1990's. The issue is that we are talking the modern style if Battle Royale where there are a large number of players and a shrinking field, which if there was a game like that before these modern versions, no one can identify it. And we go by what reliable soutlrce consider to be the defining game or work, not our own logic. -Masem (t) 18:30, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

@Masem since you may have a bit more knowledge in this area, perhaps the source listed on citation 13 (the quote from Brendan Greene) should be used as the citation for the lead that states the influence of the film Battle Royale? The lead lacks a source because we generally consider it to be summarizing the article body below it, which is sourced. Typically a source will only appear in the lead if a particular fact is heavily disputed or controversial. That's not really the case here. See WP:LEADCITE for more information. That said, if the article body is unclear about where the term's usage and direct statements of inspiration arose from, it can certainly be improved. -- ferret (talk) 18:52, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

History

@Sanctusune: We have acknowledged that there are a number of unnamed pc games that likely had Battle Royale elements before PUBG, but we have no sources that document these in depth. They may have certainly been called Battle Royale, but they aren't considered to be the key games that defined this genre. And the sources that link these games to the film Battle Royale are going off Brendan Greene's own statements, so we can't change that. --Masem (t) 18:27, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

Alright that makes a lot more sense then, truth be told, this is not a area of expertise for me, so I will leave well enough alone. This article has some mangled English as a Foreign Language excerpts:

1. "adoption" is all about getting something that's not yours to start with, and developing responsibility over it. The article probably meant "adapt":
   • Greene continued to adopt his format
   • Greene continued to adapt his format
2. "that what" doesn't make sense:
   • distinct from the genre that what would later be known as
   • distinct from the genre which became known as
3. failure to hybridise two different past tenses:
   • the genre was grew out from two principal titles
   • the genre developed from two principal titles
4. Rm repetition of "impact":
   • acknowledged the impact of the growing genre and impact on their future plans
   • acknowledged the growing genre and its impact on their future plans
5. I don't think it is possible to "take concern with" anything:
   • Despite the concern that PUBG Corporation and Tencent were taking with Chinese release,
   • remove this clause entirely. You can "take issue with" and "show concern for" but in its current state, this clause is meaningless and fails WP:TONE.

 Partly done:

1. Changed to "used". It's unclear what source is being used for this and whether this is supposed to say that he continued using the same format for different games (i.e. "adopt") or kept changing the format to fit new differing games (i.e. "adapt"). I left a citation needed tag.
2. Changed.
3. Changed to "grew". It got established earlier, then it grew later. "Developed" changes meaning.
4. That is not what the source says. Reworded to "acknowledged the impact of the growing genre on their future plans and on the industry as a whole".
5. The sentence is not meaningless, it just summarized the source poorly. Reworded to "While PUBG Corporation was working with Tencent on a Chinese release" —  HELLKNOWZ ∣ TALK 17:00, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Star Fox 64

Star Fox 64 ("Lylat Wars" in some regions) came out in 1997. Its multiplayer had a "Battle Royal" mode, which was also last-man-standing. This predates the earliest other references in the article. 110.145.146.198 (talk) 22:45, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
