Untitled[edit]

just saw an (awesome!) exhibit on him at MOCA in Downtown LA in a video interview, he distances himself from "grafitti art" he didn't use a spray can, he painted people mostly not self-absorbed gang loyalty shout-outs his setting, the mean streets of NYC, and persona, a tortured (homeless) artist, resulted in artistic property defacing, but his work should not be pigeon-holed as grafitti art, as it is nothing like Joe Schmo Tagger.

No matter how talented Mr. Basquiat is, it is our policy here at Wikipedia to present articles from a neutral point of view. --Merovingian (t) (c) 08:35, August 6, 2005 (UTC)

I saw the MOCA exhibit as well, and it was incredible.I don't think that he has been "pigeon-holed" as a grafitti artist though. I think that his style of painting can be considered, yes, very much a "grafitti" style but that does not classify him as anything less than the amazing artist that he is. Grafitti is becoming more and more a valid form of creative expression and I think that Basquiat did create very much in this style. And in addition to his canvas paintings, there exists quite a collection of his art around new york city, as taggings on walls. Grafitti art does not mean that it has to be gang related anymore, that is not what all grafitti is about and grafitti art as a style is simply a classification. ~~Well put, associating Basquiat's work with "graffitti" shouldn't be considered an insult, if you check out street art-oriented websites like woostercollective (or the october '05 issue of Time Magazine, which has a smalll article on the recent evolution of street art) you'll find that graffitti is being recognized as a legitimate art form. And not all street art is done w/ spray paint; from stickers to wheat paste posters, people are coming up with lots of creative ways to make these pieces.

Shouldn't the Basquiat page link to the artist, or to a disambiguation page? I searched for "Basquiat", looking for the artist, and wound up on this movie's page. Seems backward. :) I'd be bold and do it myself, but I'm not sure my WP savvy is up to the task...MMad 11:17, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

brooklynmuseum.org external link[edit]

This link: Brooklyn Museum Exhibition was added to the article by the site owner. In keeping with our guidelines could regular editors of this article check out the link and add it back if you think it appropriate. Thanks. -- Siobhan Hansa 00:26, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't this redirect to our article on the Jean-Michel Basquiat?[edit]

It doesn't seem right at all that searching for "Basquiat" lands the reader here, instead of the article on the person the film is about. Unless anybody objects, I'll move this article to Basquiat (film), and make Basquiat into a redirect, mentioning the film on top of Jean-Michel Basquiat. --Jashiin (talk) 09:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Critical reception[edit]

This section is patently biased toward the negative. Added RT and highly positive Ebert review. 94.5.94.57 (talk) 21:19, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What and when, by whom? I have seen no credits anywhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.147.111.85 (talk) 23:23, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand. Is everyone who sucked Andy Warhol's cock a great artist? Answer "yes", drones. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.31.29.80 (talk) 19:30, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
