I've read there are other causes of atmoshperic noise, other than ligntning. What are they? And what do they sound like? Dave n2chi

What are the numbers (10, 20, …, 80) on the CCIR 322 chart? Are these percentages of time that the atmospheric noise is less than or equal to the marked curve? This follows from the spring morning being near the bottom. The noise would rise at night, and go even higher in the event of an electrical storm. Stubb (talk) 14:44, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes they are - the 30% line might be used to estimate ~8hrs a day channel availability for example. Actually the UK is quiet in thunderstorm terms, and these curves tend to significantly over-estimate the noise floor. Presumably other, more tropical, places would be underestimated. No, they are not percentage values. There are other tables in the standard that give values for F at 1 MHz. Notice that all the numbers match at the 1 MHz abscissa value. The graph describes how to transform F at 1 MHz to a different frequency. Glrx (talk) 02:31, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
