Location and Beeching[edit]

I dispute the location of the station and why the old stations closed, the actual location is at the site of the old Arlesey and Henlow station, whilst the stations closed before Dr Beeching became Chairman of British Railways, my records suggest that the station was closed to allow the quadrupling of the tracks at that point (the route though the station platforms and level crossing being only two tracks). —Preceding unsigned comment added by SouthernElectric (talkcontribs) 16:21, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2 out of 3 - Yes, the new station is at the location of the old "Arlesey and Henlow" station, and both it and "Three counties hospital" stations were (I think) probably closed before Beeching. But the quadrupling was done much later. I remember in the 1970's both stations were long closed, but the line still reduced to two tracks at the level crossing (old A507). when the current A507 flyover was built the level crossing was closed and the track was quadrupled. If you look at Google maps you can see the current station platforms lie across the line of the "old" A507, i.e. where the level crossing was, so it is slightly north of where the old station was TiffaF 07:24, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to Butt, pp. 18,229:

  • a station named ARLSEY AND SHEFFORD ROAD was opened on 7 August 1850; this was renamed several times: to Arlesey and Shefford Road in March 1860; to Arlesey in July 1893; back to Arlesey and Shefford Road in July 1895; finally to Arlesey and Henlow on 1 March 1933, and was closed on 5 January 1959.
  • a station named ARLESEY SIDING was opened on 1 April 1866; this was renamed to Three Counties on 1 July 1886, and was closed on 5 January 1959; it was this station which was reopened and renamed Arlesey on 3 October 1988.

So, rather than "The present station opened on 3 October 1988 on the site of the original station" it should read "The present station opened on 3 October 1988 on the site of the former Three Counties railway station". --Redrose64 (talk) 22:11, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

and looking at the current Ordnance Survey map (1:50000 sheet 153) versus one from 1951 (one-inch 7th Series sheet 147) it's clear that Butt is wrong: the present Arlesey station is on the same site as the one whose final name was Arlesey and Henlow, and not the former Three Counties. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:14, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The current Arlesey station is NOT on the original Three Counties station site, I assure you. It is in the location of the original Arlesey stations under their various names. The site of the original Three Counties station can still be seen today, as the bridge still crosses where the station once was, and there is the space of where the platforms were. I use this station on a fairly regular basis, and know the area quite well; the road that the original level crossing served just north of the station, controlled by the stations signal box is still there on both sides, but severed by the station, however it is now replaced by the bridge that was built next to it.Sgreen93 (talk) 18:48, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I agree: a check of various maps, and a cursory inspection of the area nearby confirms it; it's just that Butt is generally considered to be a WP:RS, and he states otherwise. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
