Order of Wear[edit]

Is this correct? According to the official Canadian, Australia and NZ orders of precedence, the Arctic Star comes between the Air Crew Europe Star and the Africa Star. I haven't found an official UK order of wear which lists it. Arthur R (talk) 12:20, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arthur. Yes. Between the Air Crew Europe Star and the Africa Star makes no sense. The top-ranking star is the 1939–1945 Star, the only one awarded for the full duration of the war, including the Pacific part. Second ranking, in order of institution, will be the Atlantic Star and Arctic star, both awarded for the full duration of the war in Europe. Following after that, all the other stars were for parts of the war, not for the full duration of the war, in order of their respective campaign start dates. I'm afraid someone guessed wrong about the position of the Arctic Star and the rest just followed suit without thinking it through. No campaign medal is listed in the UK order of wear, it just states "in order of the date of the campaign for which awarded". -- André Kritzinger (talk) 12:59, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

South Africa (Order of Wear)[edit]

Is this really correct? The Arctic Star is a British medal, issued by the UK government, for service before 1952. It ought, then, to rank among the other WWII stars and medals, which follow the post-1952 awards awarded by the SA government. If it were to precede the SA Korea Medal, as shown, it would be separated from its WWII fellows, and imply that it was awarded by the SA government. Arthur R (talk) 12:24, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it does look silly. It's the result of a silly decision in 1952 to place all Brit awards instituted and awarded until then, from the George Cross down, after all South African awards. Everything instituted by the Queen after that, rank in their proper places. I talked to Prof Deon (DFS) Fourie about this, and we both agree that it's better to let sleeping dogs lie, in case the present powers get it into their heads to pull a similar stunt with the post-1994 awards... Still need to get hold of Fred Brownell, though, he'll have an answer. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 13:13, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Arthur, I had a long chat with Fred Brownell this afternoon, so some editing will follow soon. I sent him the link to the article to peruse first, though. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 17:39, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
