Can animals recognize tracks?[edit]

I know animals are much more attuned to scents, but are they capable of recognizing visual cues of another animal's passage? Is the art of tracking a unique human skill? If so, then it could be a reason to develop big brains and advanced communication skills. Anyone know if any anthropoligists have proposed this?
