Why is the son "Andrey Markov (Soviet mathematician)" and the father "Andrey Markov" ... seems a strange way to disambiguate. --99.234.59.230 (talk) 15:50, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Andrey Markov has to have its current target, as he is by far the most famous and important person of that name. I'm not sure what this page should be called; I dislike the idea of using the americanism 'jr.' for a Russian, but I don't know what would be better. Algebraist 22:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did Post and Markov both come up with undecidability for semigroups? Or was it post that did it and then Markov (this one) who came up with an example? I don't know a ton about algebra or its history, so I'll remain agnostic. [1] is what makes me ask. ILikeThings (talk) 19:24, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The comment in the middle of the article about when he joined the Communist party looks completely irrelevant -- the rest of the article is all about his mathematics. Is his politics noteworthy in any way? 130.60.6.54 (talk) 22:39, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Andrey Markov (Soviet mathematician)Andrey Markov, Jr. – Indeed, Markov Jr. lived most of his life in the Soviet union. However, I am not sure he considered himself a "Soviet mathematician". Cf Talk:Vladimir_Rokhlin_(Soviet_mathematician)#Requested_move for a similar discussion. Sasha (talk) 16:49, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
