Deletion from category?[edit]

Cplakidas, Just wondering, why did you remove the article from the Cypriot military personnel category? 83.71.98.198 (talk) 15:15, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because that is a parent category of the Cypriot Navy personnel category. Constantine 15:18, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay then, thanks. 83.71.98.198 (talk) 15:20, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, the Cyprus Navy crest is a copyrighted fair use image, i.e. it can only be used where it is essential for an article, but not as a generic decoration. Constantine 15:22, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I thought that since he was the head of the Cyprus Navy it would be appropriate. Do you want me to remove it for the moment? 83.71.98.198 (talk) 15:28, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. 83.71.98.198 (talk) 15:29, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I know, copyright paranoia is a pain in the ass, but rules are rules... Constantine 15:37, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And it's highly unlikely that there is anyone from the Navy or the Cypriot MOD currently available to give explicit permission for the crest to be used in this case. On the other hand, given that Ioannides was the Flag Officer in charge of the Cyprus Naval Command (Cypriot Navy), albeit with the permanent rank of Captain, you could make a very good case that the Crest was 'his' flag, and therefore valid under fair use rules. Do you think that would fly? 83.71.98.198 (talk) 18:26, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, it won't, unfortunately, I've seen such cases before. Most people would see it as decoration. About the only fair use image you can use in an article like this is a photograph of Ioannides. Constantine 19:06, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was worth a try. 83.71.98.198 (talk) 19:37, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
