Etymology missing[edit]

Can somebody tell me what is the etymology or origin of the word "Agartala"? Chiinnei (talk) 19:20, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates are wrong...[edit]

They're still wrong. They now point to Udaipur. Skinsmoke (talk) 07:37, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Skyline? You got to be kidding me.

Pronunciation[edit]

I'm confused as to why the recording of the pronunciation of the city's name is in a Hindi accent. Given Wikipedia's guidelines, the pronunciation given in the first line should either be the English pronunciation or the pronunciation in the native language. I'm not an expert on Tripura, but my guess is that the name of Agartala is Bengali, and I would expect that the recording should reflect either the English or the Bengali name of the city. --SameerKhan (talk) 08:59, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes the present pronunciation has a Hindi accent (it was done by Srikeit, a native Hindi speaker). I don't have a mic now. Will upload the Bengali pronunciation later, and replace this one. Meanwhile, any other Bengali-speaking user is welcome to replace it.--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:19, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've picked up a non-native accent over the years, otherwise I'd do it. --SameerKhan (talk) 08:31, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is this article about - Agartala or Tripura?[edit]

Some sections of this article talk more about Tripura - its history and style of government and so on - than about Agartala. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Red2Wiki (talkcontribs) 05:48, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Poor quality[edit]

"This article has been rated as start class in the project's quality scale". I am not sure what start class means, but this article is of extremely poor quality when it comes to the use of language. I understand that the author(s) are not native English speakers, but that does not take away from the fact that almost every sentence in this article has glaring grammatical errors. Some do not even make any sense! To make matters worse, the author(s) have tried to 'jazz it up' by the occasional use of an 'uncommon' word, without understanding the meaning/nuance of the words they are using. Even the style of the article is deplorable. In the introduction section, for example, facts have been stated one after the other without any rhyme or reason! And Tagore will, probably, shift in his grave at being described as "Nobel laureate Indian (Bengali) poet Rabindranath Tagore or Robindronath Thakur"! I am sorry if my comments sound somewhat scathing, but as a (former) native of the city, I fear that this article will create a bad first impression about it in the minds of outsiders. I am citing some examples below to substantiate all the points I have made, so that they do not sound arbitrary; please note that for each example I have quoted here, there are hundreds of similar instances in the rest of the article.

Examples:

  1. 1. Lack of uniform standards: Compare "Agartala lies on the bank of Haora River ..." in the introduction section with "Perched[?!] on the banks of the river Howrah ..." in the history section. I know the name of a river is a proper noun, but the same river's name being spelt differently in two consecutive sections of the same article is stretching things too far, to say the least!
  1. 2. Jazzy/uncommon words: Did the author(s) try to find out what 'perched' means before using it in the sentence "Perched on the banks of the river ..."? The thesaurus from MS Word gives the following synonyms - balanced, suspended, hovering, hanging, floating, rested, settled, sat, alighted, etc. Is the city of Agartala any of these things "on the banks of the river ..." (e.g., try "Hanging / Floating on the banks of the river Howrah ..." if you want a good laugh!)?
  1. 3. Meaningless sentences: I found many, but this one from near the top of the article takes the cake - "Agartala is a component of two words, ...". Component? Of two words? Suggest looking up "component" in a dictionary/thesaurus.
  1. 4. Senseless sentences: What is the line "Agartala has temples and palaces" in the introduction section supposed to mean/convey? Is it the only city in the world with temples and palaces or does it not have anything else?
  1. 5. Hodgepodge of facts: The introduction section speaks for itself - "Population of Agartala is ... . Literacy rate ... . Rabindranath ... . Rajmala ... . From 1901 to 1971 ... . ..." Need I say more?
  1. 6. Bad grammar: Look at this sentence from the end of the introduction section - " Though the East India Company has [sic] not arrived in this princely capital of the state but they always remained in a certain [sic] in capturing [sic] and ruling. [sic]" Could someone translate this sentence (and almost every other sentence in this article, for that matter) into English for me please?!

ACoordinate error[edit]

{{geodata-check}}

The following coordinate fixes are needed for

2405:204:B080:6763:14C8:4EEF:28D4:2DD8 (talk) 10:20, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You haven't explained what you think is wrong with the coordinates. Those in the article seemed to be basically correct, though I have tweaked them a bit to avoid overprecision. If you still think that there is an error, you'll need to supply a clear explanation of what it is. Deor (talk) 13:39, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitrary arrangements[edit]

@K.D Manikya Tripuri: The order of languages in the infobox as as per the order in the accompanying source. Do not arrange it as per you personal preferences. Also it is alphabetically arranged as well as in the ethnicity parameter. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:53, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Population by language[edit]

An IP editor keeps adding the following: 3 June 2021, 5 June 2021, 5 June 2021

Languages spoken in Agartala city (2011)[1]

  Bangali (70.7%)
  Kokborok (28.3%)
  Others (1%)
Agartala city had a population of 400,004 people, of which around 282,802 speaks Bengali as their mother tongue, 113,201 speaks Kokborok as their mother tongue, while 1% people speaks Hindi, Chakma, Nepali etc as per 2011 language census report.[2]
Bengali, the official state language, is the dominant language in Agartala city, spoken by 70.7% as per 2011, while English is also a popular additional co-official language in the state; Kokborok is spoken by the Tripuri people representing 28.3% of the city's population as per 2011 census.

References

There is a problem. The source does not support this stuff. In their most recent edit, the IP editor left an edit summary saying It have mentioned West Tripura language in which Agartala city came under.

The source has data for West Tripura, which had a total population of 1,725,739 (1,219,068 Bengali mother tongue), a rural population of 1,048,101 (594,215 Bengali mother tongue) and an urban population of 677,638 (624,853 Bengali mother tongue). The number of people with Kokbarak as their mother tongue was 403,163 (total), 379,331 (rural), and 23,832 (urban).

None of this supports the data added by the IP editor.-- Toddy1 (talk) 20:54, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2402:3A80:1BD2:7612:B397:FA5A:995A:672F (talk) 17:43, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
