Why 450 Squadron was changed from Australian to Canadian in 1970[edit]

In 1970 after integration of the Canadian Forces 1 Transport Helicopter Platoon of the Service Battalion of the Canadian Army which flew the CH 113A Voyageur helicopter was required to change to a Squadron designation and were given a choice of available Canadian Numbers but the Commanding Officer being an Army Officer didn’t want to use an RCAF number so chose 450 Squadron instead. When the mistake was noticed it would have caused a huge expense to change it to yet another Squadron so a letter was drafted by the Squadron CO to the RAAF to get their agreement to relinquish their number. It was sometime later, I believe in 1971 the approval was received from the RAAF and the squadron designed a new shoulder patch and had Coat of Arms copied from the RAAF design made for departing members.
