  • a first paragraph just to make the intro shorter.
  • About the coins, it should be better to have the titles at every picture : Image Country - Design - Volume - Date - Reference.

I personally think that it's good the way it is, we needn't give the columns for every coin (especially since it's rather clear what each column contains from context); I wouldn't be against including the engraver and/or designer, if we can find out who they are for all of them.

Motif

Everything looks good. To me tho, motif describes an ongoing theme throughout a set. I would use design, or such. But since this is the euro, maybe motif is a more european definition. The name...Euro commemorative coins(2E)or(E2)(the E is euro symbol, just didn't want to look up how to do it :) or E2 commemorative coins. The introductory paragraph contains the text "€2 euro coin". Isn't that redundant? Shouldn't it be either "€2 coin" or "2 euro coin"? Markkawika 08:18, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Plural name?

Why is this at €2 commemorative coins instead of €2 commemorative coin per naming conventions? Is it because there are multiple different kinds of them? I must assume there's some reason for this to have gotten by all the FA reviewers. Deco 02:26, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Using the name "€2 commemorative coin" would imply that there is only one kind of coin. But this page describes all the diffrent €2 commemorative coins, so the plural name makes much more sense to me. --Boivie 14:19, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Today's featured picture features an interesting osbcenity. While I was the one that uploaded it, I did create it at the request of another user who uploaded a newspaper clip of the same thing. —This user has left wikipedia 05:04 2006-01-27

No. (Not yet, anyway. Discussion on that to be re-opened after the next Norwegian legislative elections in 2009.) What will happen is that the common reverse side will change to include all of Europe, not just the EU member states (currently, only the EU-15 are depicted; to avoid having to change the common side every three years as the Balkans –and possibly other countries– join the EU, they opted for this change; cf. euro coins). —Nightstallion (?) 12:08, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Quotas & Minting

I was looking at this article and some of the linked ones and got to wondering how it is determined how many coins each country can make and possible issues that may exist when different countries mint the same curreny, but I didn't find it. This article was only nominated for FA status 17 days ago. Surely putting it as the main page FA was rather premature?

I'm not especially criticising the article itself (and obviously I'm content to have subject matter from my area feature on the main page), but it does surely suggest lax standards in the choosing of articles for the main page.

Can't see symbol before number 2...

Already mentioned on the main page, too: Firefox 1.0.4 on Mac OSX can't see the "eurosymbol" in this article. Strangely enough, it DOES appear in the title bar for the page! I get Editing Talk:(Eurosymbol)2 ... on the title bar at the top of the brower, but (space)2... in the article itself.

Directions

The heads of e.g. Henri, GD of Luxembourg are described as facing left, but are turned toward the right of the image. Is there some terminological convention in numismatics that is being used? Wales?

I haven't seen one of these coins "for real", but from the image it looks as though the map contains the same omission that appeared in another EU-published map - i.e. they've left Wales off the UK! Can anyone confirm this from a real coin? Jon Rob 14:46, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

It is a real shame for Wikipedia to make an article featured, for everyone to read, and then protect it. What a slap in the face of Wikipedia's goals and reputation.

Absolutely approve. There was a concerted group attack to destroy the article with random pictures and junk. It wasn't even an opposing point of view, but just at the level of kicking in a public telephone box. Letting it go on would destroy Wiki's credibility too. I'm afraid, you did get me confused in the end... So which way is correct? People on the coin looking left are looking at their left, right? Well, then have a good look at the pictures and the descriptions. Finland 2004 the right side of the pillar, Greece 2004 to the left is the logo of the Olympic Games, to the right is the denomination, Italy 2004 Globe tilted to the right, RI to the right of the globe, mint mark upper left of the globe, Luxembourg 2004 on the left...effigy, the right displays his monogram, twelve stars also on the right, San Marino 2004 SAN MARINO to the right of the bust... and so on. After wandering around for a while in Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics/Style, and staring at a coin crosseyed, the only conclusions i can concieve is they were discussing the metal stamp that rams the design into the coins, hence everything is backwards? Or, more likely but less geeky invention, it's from standing behind ones own shield, heraldratically speaking...   • Well, yes. I am afraid it is heraldry all over again. It makes some sense, if you think of portraits of people on the coins looking at their left, walking to their right or having things done to their left arm or right leg. Think of ot anatomically, if it makes you happy. Ask any physician. 2€ Belgium 2005

I have the coin Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union described in your article and I could upload a picture of the coin. I prefer using pictures of the the actual coins, especially since the picture featured on the page is slightly incorrect regarding the mint symbols at the bottom. My coin is circulated, though. 2€ Treaties of Rome 2007

First of all, this page is great. Keep up the good work. A couple of days ago a proposal was made for the joined 2007 2 euro coin. Perhaps it's worth mentioning? Sort by date

The list would be more interesting if it was sorted by date of issuing. It's already sorted by year, so why not completing the chronology of the list rather than listing by the name of the country? CG 14:51, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

It's chronologically listed in the official site. Look at 2004. The only problem is between Luxembourg (23 June) and Finland (June/July). The official site seems to have solved it by considering that Luxembourg has issued before Finland. As for other dates, everything is clear. CG 10:03, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Reversal of sides in Germany 2006 Holstentor coin

I made an edit awhile back that reversed the directions (left and right) on the Holstentor coin. Please clearly read the text on the cited page (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/site/en/oj/2006/c_033/c_03320060209en00050005.pdf), it says the HH (designers initials) are on the right side.

Just because the OJ of the EU doesn't properly use heraldic descriptions doesn't mean we have to do it wrong, as well. —Nightstallion (?) 12:44, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Magdeburg Cathedral

Nightstallion I don't understand why you have a problem with the name Magdeburg Cathedral...?? "Cathedral of Magdeburg" may very well be the title of an image or even an article.. BUT that still doesn't make it correct usage.

As an example: we don't use "Abbey of Westminster" or "Cathedral of Durham" as the names of the those places. I'm afraid you are confusing "of" with the German usage of "von", so I have once again changed the reference in the article. By the way, in the same article the Kölner Dom is noted as "Cologne Cathedral" and not "Cathedral of Cologne" ... shame really as it might have smelt quite nice :-)--IsarSteve 20:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

You know, it's really quite simple. If the correct idiomatic name in English is "Magdeburg Cathedral", then the article should be at that location. If it's at Cathedral of Magdeburg, then you are either wrong, or the article should be moved, I don't care which. it's really not worth the bother of replying..BUT If you want to make the article and yourself look childish, then carry on using "Cathedral of Magdeburg". My last word on the subject. You're not really listening, are you? My point is, if you're right, then Cathedral of Magdeburg is not at its correct location and should be moved to Magdeburg Cathedral; I ventured that you should be the one to do this, as you claim that this is the more idiomatic form. Upon the suggestion of Nightstallion, I have updated the release dates for many of the coins. Also, there is now some new information regarding the German commemorative coins in the Bundeländer Series for 2008 and 2009.

There is a question about three release dates which I have brought to Nightstallion's attention on his talk page.

Belgium Treaty of Rome Inscription

The original entry was this: PACTVM ROMANVM QVINQVAGENARIVM, EUROPEA, BELGIQUE–BELGIE–BELGIEN

It was changed to this:

, BELGIQUE–BELGIE–BELGIEN

The image in nature and scope disrupts the conventions of the article, so I changed it to this: PACTVM ROMANVM QVINQVAGENARIVM, EUROPÆ

I think this is more to the original intent and 'spirit' of the design inscription.

If there is any way to re-create the A over the E in such a way which excludes an image, but incorporates the Latin language intent with reagrd to the AE ligature.

Until then, I'm inclined to leave the original entry as is because it is the closest way to represent the actual inscription.

Any thoughts?

I've reverted it back to my version for the reasons given above; I'd like to clarify that it's not meant to be Latin, it's meant to show the French, Dutch and German word for "Europe", which just happen to be "Europe", "Europa" and "Europa". —Nightstallion (?) 13:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Missing images

Could someone be so nice as to reupload images for Finland (04, 05, 06) Italy (06), San Marino (06) and the general image for the Rome Treaty coin? They've been deleted on the commons. —Nightstallion (?) 07:40, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed this- all of the regular euro coin images have also been deleted. Is there an issue with copyright of the coin images? If this is the case, can you tell me what licensing needs to be applied as well as the categories, etc? I have high quality images of all euro coins. I can also provide the appropriate copyright permissions and use perameters set by the European Central Bank.
Nightstallion, if I uploaded all of these images, could you follow behind me and apply the appropriate categories and so forth to the images? I think I need to know what the licensing should be first.

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. For future reference... any of the images of future coins on this article, the author, Nightstallion, has made suggestions for filenames of the images, but has rendered them invisible using the tags <!-- -->. Image column

There is an issue regarding the fixed width vs. image centering in the article. There is a fixed width present in the image column of 160px. The purpose for this is due to the fact that the issue years are divided into individual sections and there would be an inconsistent width between sections for each of the images. The images themselves are set to a width of 150px, leaving 10px in the cell, within which the image then centers because of the <center> tag. Example:

As the image is now centered, there is a consistent 5px on either side of all images in the article no matter the content in the other portions of the table row. That the columns are fixed at a width of 160px has nothing whatever to do with the alignment of the image in the column. This has been the standard since the article attained Featured Article status.

This is turning interesting. It is not my machine since I am seeing the same results on different machines, in different locations. However, went an extra step and found out that it renders OK in Safari, K-Meleon and Firefox, but it does not render OK with IE, Avantgo and AOL browser. Any clues what could it be?
FYI, this is what I see:

As you can see, it does not look good (the images are not centered, the row is not 160 pixels). It looks like IE expands the cell regardless of the width=160 instruction when the description in the next row (spanned across 5 columns) 'expands' the whole table to the width of the screen (since table width=100%). I am currently checking in some groups and forums about this particular problem of IE and seeing if there is any remedy to it. In de mean while, will it be OK to add "...| width=160..." to every single cell that represents a coin image in the table? You must have a very wide monitor. I'm not sure it is necessary to add the width to every cell where the images are present; there may be another solution to this. It seems odd that my browsers display correctly while yours does not. Also, I notice that the Description text is centered... it appears left aligned in FF and IE on my machine as well as a number of off site machine as well. Layout suggestion

How about making the table cell containing the picture span 2 rows? This would make the description line appear right to the picture and make the page more compact and less white-spacey if you understand what I mean. The description used in the design contest only describes the theme of the image, not a forensic description of the design itself. The description that usually goes here is one from the official source- the Official Journal of the EU... which will be available in January 2009- presumably.

Common commemorative entries

Should there be a different subsection for these issues? I know there is some degree of continuity having the coins organized by order of release, however, perhaps the common issues can go at the bottom of the list? Only because if someone were to edit 2007 for example, the entire list will load and it makes editing something of a difficult process. Just a suggestion... Cheers. There is no direct reference on that website. If you read the news page, you will find that Monaco and Cyprus have scheduled an issue for this year. The latest is that Cyprus will join the other three countries issuing commemoratives honoring the 60th anniversarry of Human Rights Declaration. The website you have referenced says 'probably canceled'. The issue is still on the schedule of the Paris mint. I stand firm by my original interpretation that the website says 'probably canceled'. As to a greater source of information: I wouldn't put too much weight into what this website says... have you noticed the naughty pictures? It is generally best to get this kind of information direct from the originating source i.e. the Paris Mint. In any case, the Paris mint has this coin on their schedule for release this year. There is a possibility that it may be canceled, but until such time as the Paris mint removes this issue from their schedule for 2008- as far as I'm concerned- the coin will be produced. Cheers. I'm sure the reason its a featured article is because it fits the Featured article criteria, I also see no reason why it cannot be a featured list as long as it fits the Featured list criteria. Release date of commemorative Italy €2 2008 & San Marino €2 2008

On the article the release date for the Italian commemorative €2 coin is April, This has also been said to be the release date of the San Marino €2 2008. Are you sure this is correct? The Royal Scandinavian Mint have said that the release date for Italy is October & for San Marino its May. Also the AASFN Philatelic & Numismatic Official Website Appears to back up the San Marino claim as the coin will not be on sale until 20th May. There are essentially two dates for most 2 euro commemoratives and, I believe, most commemoratives in general... an FDI, which is the First Date of Issue and an FDC, which is the First Date of Circulation. While these coins may not yet be on sale and not yet available for the general public to purchase them, they have already been issued. Typically, the FDI is determined by the ECB, but the FDC is determined by the individual national banks. The long and short of the matter is this: unless otherwise specified, the dates published in the Official Journal of the EU (which is almost always the FDI) are used in this article. The use of <sup>

First, apologies for my bad edit before, I lost my internet connection right at the moment of doing the edit and the result was garbage being sent out.

I want to discuss about a recent edit, removing all <sup>. As far as I am aware off, this is not a hard standard, and (at least for me) the numbers are by far easier to read. The only thing against is that people need a bit of knowledge of HTML when doing edits; but that does not apply to articles like this one, when a set of editors has been contributing and they have demonstrated the proper use of HTML in the past.

I was hoping that my link to Template talk:Th would be sufficient, as it contains the reasons and links to additional reasons, but I'll try to summarize it here anyway. The rule about ordinal suffixes not being superscripted has been unchanged for 13 months on the official guideline. When an admin brought it up to WT:MOSNUM (see Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)/Archive 104#Suffix of ordinal numbers) earlier this month, I decided to investigate and found further reason to deprecate those superscripts. "Easier to read" seems to be the only reason to keep them, but I think it's a subjective argument that is outweighed by the objective evidence I found (in the MOSNUM archive). —LOL (talk) 18:44, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
LOL, I read the article, and the strong points to remove the <sup> are:
  • Difficult to edit (it does not apply here as mentioned before)
  • It creates extra line spacing (so is the references, and this article if pretty well referenced)
I really do not see the reason, and we have a set of editors that keep this article very tight in content. My opinion is that we should respect those editors view, and this is why I have opened the discussion here. If the consensus is "let's remove it" I will have nothing against.

Despite what WT:MOSNUM has stipulated for the past 13 months, this article has been maintained by very capable editors, including at least one administrator, for much longer and has managed to achieve WP:FA status without adhering to the WT:MOSNUM rules regarding this matter. Subjectivity it is easier to read; objectively, the superscripted ordinals style coincides with the official information from which the information contained within this article is gleaned.

Theeuro: The achievement of FA status predates the rule's addition by 16 months, so this article could not have been in violation of the rule at the time. Also, the official information's style is insignificant to this article's because it is not a style guide. There are many official sources on the net that use hyphens in the place of en dashes (–), but those are considered errors on Wikipedia.

Actually didn't Belgium for example adapt the new map but was with a smooth surface instead of a bumpy surface.

Proposal to remove date-autoformatting

Dear fellow contributors

MOSNUM no longer encourages date autoformatting, having evolved over the past year or so from the mandatory to the optional after much discussion there and elsewhere of the disadvantages of the system. Related to this, MOSNUM prescribes rules for the raw formatting, irrespective of whether a date is autoformatted or not). MOSLINK and CONTEXT are consistent with this.

There are at least six disadvantages in using date-autoformatting, which I've capped here:

  • (1) In-house only
  • (a) It works only for the WP "elite".
  • (b) To our readers out there, it displays all-too-common inconsistencies in raw formatting in bright-blue underlined text, yet conceals them from WPians who are logged in and have chosen preferences.
  • (c) It causes visitors to query why dates are bright-blue and underlined.
  • (2) Avoids what are merely trivial differences
  • (a) It is trivial whether the order is day–month or month–day. It is more trivial than color/colour and realise/realize, yet our consistency-within-article policy on spelling (WP:ENGVAR) has worked very well. English-speakers readily recognise both date formats; all dates after our signatures are international, and no one objects.
  • (3) Colour-clutter: the bright-blue underlining of all dates
  • (a) It dilutes the impact of high-value links.
  • (b) It makes the text slightly harder to read.
  • (c) It doesn't improve the appearance of the page.
  • (4) Typos and misunderstood coding
  • (a) There's a disappointing error-rate in keying in the auto-function; not bracketing the year, and enclosing the whole date in one set of brackets, are examples.
  • (b) Once autoformatting is removed, mixtures of US and international formats are revealed in display mode, where they are much easier for WPians to pick up than in edit mode; so is the use of the wrong format in country-related articles.
  • (c) Many WPians don't understand date-autoformatting—in particular, how if differs from ordinary linking; often it's applied simply because it's part of the furniture.
  • (5) Edit-mode clutter
  • (a) It's more work to enter an autoformatted date, and it doesn't make the edit-mode text any easier to read for subsequent editors.
  • (6) Limited application
  • (a) It's incompatible with date ranges ("January 3–9, 1998", or "3–9 January 1998", and "February–April 2006") and slashed dates ("the night of May 21/22", or "... 21/22 May").
  • (b) By policy, we avoid date autoformatting in such places as quotations; the removal of autoformatting avoids this inconsistency.

Removal has generally been met with positive responses by editors. Does anyone object if I remove it from the main text in a few days’ time on a trial basis? The original input formatting would be seen by all WPians, not just the huge number of visitors; it would be plain, unobtrusive text, which would give greater prominence to the high-value links. Left and right

The following explanation is given in both a note and a footnote:

Note: In heraldry, directions are often described as they would appear to the bearer of a coat of arms, rather than as they would appear to the viewer. Therefore, the following descriptions will use "facing to the left" when it would appear to the layman that the person depicted is facing to the right.

I know that this is true in heraldry. If you consider the historic use of arms, it makes some kind of sense to have this convention about left and right interpreted from the bearer's point of view when talking about coats of arms.

I did not know that the same convention is used in numismatics. Here on this Wikipedia article is the first time I have seen the heraldic convention applied to coins. There has never been a use where coins have a bearer, this convention makes no sense when describing coins.

Furthermore, the official descriptions in the Official Journal of the European Communities/Union do not follow this convention.

The coin's inner section shows an effigy of His Majesty Albert II, King of the Belgians, in profile facing to the left. To the right of this, the royal monogram is displayed and, below it, the indication of the country ‘BE’. Underneath the effigy, the signature mark of the Master of the Mint is displayed on the left and the mint mark on the right, either side of the year. The outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.

In this description, left and right are clearly the viewer's left and right, not heraldic left and right.

Other Wikipedia articles also do not follow the heraldic left/right convention. For example (there are many more examples): Australian 1 dollar coin: Inscription of AUSTRALIA on the right hand side and ELIZABETH II on the left hand side. In this description, left hand side and right hand side are clearly the viewer's left and right, not heraldic left and right.

Consider Belgium's first series and Albert II. When we look at this coin, the portrait is looking to the left. However, we are seeing the left side of his face, which means he is facing right (he is also looking to the right and we are seeing his left profile). Another way to think about this is when we look at someone who is looking at us. When we ask them to raise their right hand, from our point of view, their left hand moves. When we stand behind someone and ask the same question, from our point of view, their right hand moves. The same is true of coins. If you hold the coin so that you are behind it, the effigy is clearly facing right. The standards of heraldic terminology are used in the design and production process. I agree it can make sense when you are talking about the left and the right side of the depicted subject (especially if it is a person). But my fundamental remark is not really about whether the convention makes sense, it is about whether the convention is actually used.

The inner part of the coin shows a cork oak (Quercus Suber). Under the branches, on the left hand side, the Portuguese coat of arms; on the right hand side, the word ‘POR TU GAL’ written on three lines.
Here, left hand side and right hand side refer to the left and the right of the coin according to the viewer, not the tree's left and right side.
My comment here can be considered a form of [citation needed]. I do not dispute that the non-viewer convention is used in heraldry (I have seen it often enough). I want a reliable authoritative citation that in the heraldic convention is used in numismatics (describing coins) as well.

As a numismatist I would like to add weight to the comment that heraldic notions of direction are NEVER used in numismatics. This is true of all descriptions used in any numismatic litterature referring to coins of any age. Thus, from a numismatists point of view the descriptions given here are plainly wrong. If they were provided to any numismatist without the illustrations and he was asked to reproduce the image, his or her drawings would be the mirror image of the real thing.

I think they should be in separated table — placed under or next to this one. Now there are mixed common issues with normal that is, in my opinion, chaotic and does not give required overview.
