Integration?[edit]

Exactly what would it mean to be "integrated into the United States"? Does anyone have any information from the time of the referendum to explain what would happen if the referendum had favoured that option AND had a sufficient turn-out? Only statehood would make it fully integrated, as only states have voting members in both houses of Congress, participate in the federal presidential election, and a star on the flag. Alternatively, the islands would become a federal district like the District of Columbia, which seems unprecedented and inconceivable, or part of another state, which also seems to be inconceivable due to the cultural distinction.

As to the turnout, if the turnout had been at least 40 percent, it would be comparable or superior to municipal election turnout, and should have been considered as the cut-off, rather than 50 percent! GBC (talk) 17:33, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
