How should the featured picture be rotated? Should it be weekly, like the featured article? Or daily, or monthly? Should we just change it ad-hoc? Is it time to be rotated now? Jdorje 03:33, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it to the oft-misused picture of Hurricane Floyd. Feel free to change it back if you think Cyclone Catarina didn't get enough coverage. - Cuivienen 21:07, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nominations[edit]

January 2006[edit]

How about we do it at the beginning of every month? I nominate the picture to the right, without the bottom part. It shows a rare spectacle of a hurricane, having small features inside an eyewall. In addition, Isabel is a fairly well known. If that picture is stupid or something, I would like to nominate the picture to the left. Wilma is simply amazing with its 2 mile wide, and that is simply one of the most awesome hurricane pictures I have ever seen. Hurricanehink 04:02, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I like that Wilma one too. It's very breathtaking. That should be our featured picture.Fableheroesguild 08:21, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It should be uploaded to commons, and it needs more text in the image page (Image:Wilma 2005-10-14 1315Z.jpg). Jdorje 08:35, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That picture of Isabel is fantastic. But how about a Western Pacific picture for once. Try this one on for size: [1] Two super typhoons for the price of 1! Look at Paka: [2]. Nida: [3]. Mitch was an exceptionally photogenic storm:

[4], [5], this place has a bunch of great Mitch pics: [6]. I know we just had a Floyd picture but look at this: [7]. That is very impressive. That picture of Hurricane Emily:

, looks really good. So there are a lot of options. Personally, I think many of these including the Isabel pic are better than that one of Wilma. Wilma sadly wasn't as photogenic as her predecessor Gilbert. -- Hurricane Eric - my dropsonde - archive 23:34, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The wilma pic is extremely impressive. However it's important to realize all of wilma's time as a super-intense hurricane happened at night. The picture we have now was taken just after dawn, so the clouds are still pretty dark. And remember that at the time the picture was taken hurricane-force winds extended outwards only about 15 miles from the eye center. Jdorje 23:59, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Ivan-Joan one isn't bad. Paka is awesome! Whoa, just had an idea. What if the selected picture was a hurricane/typhoon/cyclone from that month? February could be Four Southern Hemisphere Tropical Cyclones, March could be Cyclone Gafilo or Ingrid, April could be Ana or some other important April storm, May could be Hurricane Adolph or Cyclone Adeline/Juliet, Hurricane Audrey orHurricane Carlotta for June, too many choices for July through October, Hurricane Lenny for November, and Paka for December. I don't know, I just thought of it, but could something like that work? Hurricanehink 01:35, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Selected articles should be taken based on their quality assessment. See Category:Tropical cyclone articles by quality. Jdorje 08:06, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It should be noted that any images taken by NASA using MODIS should be uploaded in their highest resolution format. At lower resolutions the borders are bolder and showing right through the clouds. I've noticed a number of images like this, and I would fix them myself if it would let me. For example, I would consider this [8] one a bad choice to use because there are larger ones available. Also, as we've discovered, images shouldn't be much larger than 4000x4000 pixels because wikipedia has trouble displaying them. Good kitty 07:05, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But those two are contradictory! We should be uploading them at maximum resolution, but because of the obnoxious technical limitations we can't always do so. Jdorje 07:10, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

February 2006[edit]

Uh, we need another picture, and fast. How about Cyclone Catarina's pic? Hurricanehink 22:32, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good picture, but we already had it (and we had it up when the Catarina article was selected, too). Although it was before we had the "rotating" pics, so we could bring it back sometime. For the moment I went ahead and put up an Emily pic (suggested above...and maybe it's appropriate since the TCR should come out this month). I just now read EBrown's suggestion that the month should correspond to the picture...Catarina was in March so maybe it could be next month. Jdorje 00:16, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Emily sounds good, and I'm glad you're doing the by-monthly thing (BTW, it was my idea, but no biggie). Nothing much has happened in the month of February, so hopefully the Emily report will come out for your sake ;-) Catarina sounds good for March, so why don't we discuss April a bit while we're right here. Ana comes to mind, but there's no good pictures of it. There's always the 1991 Bangladesh Cyclone, but the images we have aren't the best of quality. There were some powerful Southern Hemisphere cyclones during the month of April, but we have time to discuss it. Hurricanehink 00:42, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The hurricane in the small photo (Gafilo) is a March cyclone. It hit Madagascar with Category 5 strength, although I don't think the storm in the picture is that strong yet. Good kitty 02:50, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

March 2006[edit]

I went ahead and made Catarina for March, though for a few hours there was nothing. We should talk now what April's should be. I think we should have the featured picture represent a storm from the month it is featured in, so for April it should either be Ana, the 1991 Bangladesh Cyclone, or some southern hemisphere storm. Please discuss. Hurricanehink 17:32, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

April 2006[edit]

Not from April, but this picture of Cyclone Ingrid is impressive, and it would make a nice picture for the next month. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 07:28, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aww, that would have been nice for March. Can you think of an April one? Hurricanehink 12:40, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How about this one of Tropical Cyclone Inigo? It was taken on April 2.Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 19:10, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

<---- That's not bad. Nothing spectular, and could possibly work. Was Inigo an important cyclone or anything? Hurricanehink 22:09, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inigo eventually became a Category 5 equivalent (after this photo was taken), and its precursor disturbance killed around 50 people. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 22:43, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What about Cyclone Orson? A picture of it can be seen here. Hurricanehink 02:15, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't forget about this. We have a few weeks, and shouldn't wait until the night before. Hurricanehink 05:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The image of Orson isn't very good, as it is a whole-globe pic... I think the Inigo pic would be a good one to have. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 05:10, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, I was thinking about that when I put it in. Alright, I suppose Inigo works. Hurricanehink 05:14, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May 2006[edit]

OK, I made Inigo the picture. Now, we should talk about May's. We have a few options, including Adolph (2001), Damrey (2000), or a cyclone in the North Indian Ocean. I personally vote for Damrey. Hurricanehink 02:58, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just a reminder, May is coming up soon. Hurricanehink 13:52, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We need a new picture very soon. I change my mind on Damrey, so is Adolph fine with everyone? Hurricanehink 03:15, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Adolph one was taken at an angle instead of directly above. I replaced the low resolution version (which should never be used) on this one. It's sitting right on top of the Philippines.
Good kitty 13:55, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

June 2006[edit]

Good find and good work on that one. I'll add it for the May one. So we don't wait too long, what should June's be? I'm thinking Allison (2001) or Carlotta. Allison could work well, seeing as there hasn't been a tropical storm yet. Hurricanehink 20:54, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guys, we really need a picture for June. How about File:Typhoon Cobra, 18 December 1944 east of Luzon.jpg?

That's OK, but we want to have the image occur in the month it is being selected in. I vote for Allison. Anyone opposed? Hurricanehink (talk) 14:30, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not opposed to Allison, but I wanted a radar image. Maybe Allsion or Image:Audrey before landfall.gif
Go for the radar pic of Allison over Mississippi then?--Nilfanion (talk) 15:04, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh cool, I like that one. I vote for that one! Icelandic Hurricane #12(talk) 15:11, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That works well. I put it in. Hurricanehink (talk) 16:52, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yay. And speaking of radar images, I found some of Hurricane Emily (1993) that look like they would go well on Wikipedia, but I don't know if we can use them. You can find them on google if you do an image search titled "hurricane emily (1993) radar". Icelandic Hurricane #12(talk) 16:55, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, while we're here, we should choose a pic for July, so were not doing it at the last second. How about Claudette? Icelandic Hurricane #12(talk) 17:01, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea thinking ahead. Claudette could work, though it would be 2 Atlantics in a row. I think it is time for EPAC. What about Elida? Hurricanehink (talk) 17:09, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fine with me. I also realized that Claudette had been the TCportal FA. So it would've been on there twice (Or we could have Elida in August and have a North Indian cyclone in July, since there have been no North Indian Cyclones in August). Icelandic Hurricane #12(talk) 17:33, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We need to decide soon. I guess it's gonna be either Elida or a North Indian cyclone. I would prefer a NIC per above, but whatever. íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 14:37, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August 2006[edit]

I hope you don't mind, but I put in Elida, seeing as we're doing the monthly thing. For August, we have a lot of choices. Seeing as we haven't had a WPAC for a few months, what about a pic of Chaba and Aere? It's impressive of Chaba, and Aere's not too bad either. While I'm thinking of it, September could be a pic of the Four Simultaneous hurricanes in 1998. Hurricanehink (talk) 18:03, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd also like to see a picture of Alberto 00 before it's too late. That would be in August though. íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 18:46, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ohh.. I'm really getting carried away, but what about Keith at peak intensity. I think it looks really cool. That would be September or maybe October, but most likely September. íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 18:48, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ehh, Alberto never looked that good, and isn't good enough for FP, IMO. Keith could work, but let's wait until August before we talk about September's, come to think of it. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:14, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest Image:Hurricane Katrina Eye viewed from Hurricane Hunter.jpg because it may be nice to have something other than a satellite photo. But Keith and others would be good, too. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 22:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely agree to the Eye picture, there's more to tropical cyclones than satellite pictures. Why should we restrict ourselves to pictures of the storms all the time anyway? We invariably have a satellite pic on the portal from the selected article anyway, and the storm picture in the introduction... All we have to do is be selective. I suggest we try and use a satellite/radar pic for the Picture iff the selected article is not a storm. I suggest we use Image:KatrinaNewOrleansFlooded.jpg at some point (perhaps time it so its up at the end of August?).--Nilfanion (talk) 23:05, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great ideas. I'm not sure which would be better for the month of August, though I'm personally leaning towards the flooding picture. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:26, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, someone better choose one. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 14:46, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I vote for the Katrina flooding one. Hurricanehink (talk) 17:55, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, me too. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 19:51, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September 2006[edit]

We need a new one for September. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 20:57, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One of the two non-storm FPs: Image:Hurricane Katrina Eye viewed from Hurricane Hunter.jpg or Image:Global tropical cyclone tracks-edit2.jpg? Both of those would be good IMO.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:01, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We should do the Global tropical cyclone tracks for September, seeing as August has Katrina already. Hurricanehink (talk) 21:38, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

October 2006[edit]

We'll need a new one for October soon. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 19:33, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about Keith? íslenskur fellibylur #12 (samtal) 21:42, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to keep to October, then how about Mitch? Good kitty 19:36, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November 2006[edit]

Ideas for November? Here's a good eye photo: Image:Typhoon Yuri eye.jpg Good kitty 04:31, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea. I support that. Hurricanehink (talk) 04:57, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

December 2006[edit]

We need one for December. Not easy, given the relative lack of impressive December cyclones in both NHem and SHem. – Chacor 14:59, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vamei's the best one I can think of. íslenskur fellibylur #12 (samtal) 15:09, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I take that back, I forgot about Zoe. íslenskur fellibylur #12 (samtal) 15:12, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Faxai looks pretty nice. Hurricanehink (talk) 16:15, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't like the NRL markings, should've been cropped out. Also, the image source link doesn't work, so that needs fixing. – Chacor 01:35, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This one? - Image:STC_John_dec_14_1999_0732Z.jpg RaNdOm26 05:39, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Found some more Zoe, Agni, Cyclone 3B, This storm isn't in any article, Odette, and of course Zeta. Good kitty 16:32, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

January, February, March 2007[edit]

I'd like to set up at least the next three months of pictures. I'm trying to think of what hasn't been done yet - maybe a radar image? I think the pictures have to be ones that we have access to at full resolution.

I'll start Image:Hurricane_Alice.jpg for January? Good kitty 17:21, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. How about Leon-Eline or Four simultaneous S. Indian Ocean tc's for February? For March we could do Gafilo, seeing as it's a featured picture. April, if we're even thinking about it now, could be Monica (this one or another Monica pic) or Mala to change it up a bit by having a North Indian Ocean one. Another April one to consider might be Ana, seeing as we haven't had a tropical storm in a while. Hurricanehink (talk) 20:22, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Strong oppose to all of these except the 4 simultaneous TC's and H Alice (at least its not a satellite picture). Use something else please (damage?). The portal is devalued by always having satellite pics of TCs and nothing else, as the article is invariably going to be a storm article; select something different for the pic! TS Allison's HPC rainfall graphic is an example of this.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:57, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Radar pic of Hurricane Erika making landfall? Titoxd(?!?) 23:02, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thats reasonable ;) Guys we don't need either the picture or the article to relate to the month it is shown in the Portal on. By doing so we have to drag the bottom of the barrel at the start of the year and lose out on many good choices, simply because there are TONS in Aug/Sep.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:20, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There's a similar one for TS Allison that's been done. For something that hasn't been done, maybe QuikSCAT [9] Good kitty 20:06, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Or how about a TRMM of Cyclone Daryl? We'd still get a January storm, and it's something slightly different... – Chacor 02:42, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like it. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:47, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Selected pictures[edit]
