Michael J. Keplinger (born November 10, 1999) is an Austrian musician and filmmaker.

Biography[edit]

Michael J. Keplinger was born on November 10, 1999 in Linz, Upper Austria.[1] Inspired by the music of the Beatles from an early age,[2] Keplinger began learning to play the guitar at the age of eight, followed by other string and keyboard instruments.[3] At the age of 10, Keplinger began to produce his first full music albums in the basement of the family home. He is also enthusiastic about films early on.[2]

His experimental music video False Neon God, which Keplinger created in 2019 as part of his diploma thesis, debuts in 2020 at the Crossing Europe Film Festival[4][5] – one of the largest film festivals in Austria.[6] The music video features Linz-based performance artist Silke Grabinger (aka SILK), who among other things had previously performed in the Beatles-themed Cirque du Soleil production, LOVE.[7]

Also in 2020, Keplinger releases the song Pick Up Your Cross (and follow me) with an accompanying hand-animated music short film.[8][3] This work is awarded The “Levi” Award for The Best Music Video at the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival that year,[9] where it is praised as “stylistically ideal” by the four-member jury.[10] It is also awarded several times by VÖFA – Austrian member of the Union Internationale du Cinéma – including a gold medal and a special award for a remarkable idea.[11][12]

His first narrative short film Allerseelen premieres at the Crossing Europe Film Festival in 2022[13] an subsequently wins Best Super Short Experimental at the Flatness Film Awards 2022,[14] Best Horror/Thriller Film at the Austrian Filmfestival 2022 as well as a total of four awards from VÖFA in 2023.[15] For Allerseelen, he served as director, composer and screenwriter and was involved in editing and sound design.[16]

For his second narrative short film Iris, Keplinger again serves as director, composer, screenwriter and sound designer, among other roles. The film once again premieres at the Crossing Europe Film Festival 2024[17] and again earns Keplinger several awards from the VÖFA, including remarkable direction, remarkable sound design and a gold medal.[18]

Outside of his work in film and music, Keplinger runs the company MJK Media e.U. and teaches as a lecturer at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences.[19]
