I changed the text from "Make a donation" to "Donate to Wikipedia" because we've been getting some donations with explanatory text like "For the flood victims" - i.e., clearly directed at the subject of the article. Much like the change from "Contact us" to "Contact Wikipedia" - David Gerard 16:12, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An hour later ... my sidebar still says "Make a donation". Is this definitely the right message? Splash - tk 17:12, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's displaying as 'Donate to Wikipedia' for me. Try bypassing your cache if you haven't already and if it's still showing incorrectly. --ais523 16:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
...3 days later! It took ~24 hours to show for me, I think. Before that I had performed the usual ablutions to no effect. Splash - tk 19:56, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does it bother anyone else that this is the only message that causes a line break? - cohesion 16:52, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't linebreak for me. I reckon at least 3 more characters could be on the line before that happened, and I'm using a standard 1024x760 screen and default Windows/Firefox text sizes. Splash - tk 22:22, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It breaks, well line breaks, under Ubuntu 7.04 in its default configuration. —Ruud 22:36, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia[edit]

Our legal entity is Wikimedia not Wikipedia, so shouldn't we say Wikimedia in the sidebar? ϢereSpielChequers 22:49, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I came here to say the exact same thing. I stuck a template at the top to get some more attention. Legoktm (talk) 05:59, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: I'm wary of implementing this without a wider discussion involving the WMF. True, the legal entity is the Wikimedia Foundation, but just look at the content of the link: the title is "From Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales" and the first sentence says "Wikipedia is the #5 site on the web", and it consistently uses Wikipedia throughout. The WMF tend to think about their branding quite carefully, in my experience, so they might not want this changed. Maybe you could start a discussion about it at WP:VPR and let the foundation know somehow? Best — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 06:16, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks for the prompt response. I'm not sure if this needs WMF involvement since it was added by a volunteer, however its best to be safe rather than sorry. I'll start a discussion on VPR and poke a few WMF people. Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 06:22, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See above for why I made the change. People know what Wikipedia is, it's the site they're on; they don't necessarily know what Wikimedia is. And donations do support Wikipedia, so it's not wrong. The page the link goes to talks about Wikipedia, though it mentions that the legal entity donations go to is the Wikimedia Foundation.
I made the edit back in the ad-hoc days of 2007; I would suggest that a change go via the fundraising department, now there is one - David Gerard (talk) 08:35, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
