Where is the book content held?

I'm very confused about my book. As far as I can tell, I can have only one book, and creating a new one destroys the previous. It also appears to be held with the browser's cookies, so that switching browsers on the same machine, e.g. from MSIE to Opera, effectively hides the book. In the same vein, of course using a different machine (and hence a different set of cookies) also hides the book. What this means is that I am unable to build my book from different locations, nor from different browsers.

Is all this true, or have I missed something?

This is how the software works for new users. A new user is allowed to construct a book and then download it or ask for it to be printed, but cannot save it to be worked on later. I'm not sure why the software was configured this way, but there it is. (I don't know whether browser cookies are used).
Fortunately, if you make just one more edit to any Wikipedia page - perhaps a reply here, or an edit to the Wikipedia:Sandbox - then you will become "autoconfirmed", and the software will no longer treat you as a new user. You will then be able to save books and come back to them later. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:33, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Aah, that did it! Actually, I'm not a new user, but for various reasons, mostly that I'm at various locations in China, I didn't want to log on, even though I made several edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnmperry (talkcontribs) 10:01, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Now I have a further problem - I have managed to save two entirely different books created on two different machines. Now I can't figure out how to close either and start a new book. When I start the book creation sequence I get a pop-up saying I can OK to continue with current book, or Cancel to delete it. I don't want to do either. I want to close current book without deleting, then start a new one. Is it just incorrect wording or will my saved book(s) really get deleted? Johnmperry (talk) 23:25, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Your "contributions" list tells me that you have successfully saved two books, User:Johnmperry/Books/Management and User:Johnmperry/Books/The Firm. Only administrators can delete pages, so I'm pretty sure that the "Cancel" button is a safe option. If all else fails I can ask an admin to undelete them! -- John of Reading (talk) 07:56, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
