Karl Franck Ngomba Ngame, better known by his artist name, Karl Warrash (born September 30, 1997 in Yaoundé), is a Cameroonian rapper.[1] He made a name for himself in 2018 with a remix of the single Pills and Automobiles by American singer Chris Brown, and went on to release a string of singles. In 2022, he became the first Cameroonian rapper to collaborate with a Polish artist on the track Time, and went on to win a gold record in 2024 with the same collaboration.[2]
Biography[edit]
Warrash is the eldest of five siblings, and hails from the Littoral region and the Sawa ethnic group.
He began rapping at the age of 17 with a group of friends from the Nkoabang neighborhood, where he lived at the time. He started out in a hip-hop group called Gry Dreamz Team, which he founded in 2015 with his Nkoabang friends rappers T-flo, Krislaure and Willy-P. As soon as he obtained his baccalauréat littéraire in 2017, he first launched himself into the professional world and was recruited by a French telesales company, before deciding to launch a solo career in 2018. From then on, he produced a cover of Chris Brown and Kodak Black's single Pills and Automobiles, a cover that revealed him to the public of his city. In 2018, he founded the record label Warrash Music Starz Company, which later became Warrash Music Group. In 2019, he successively releases the singles Akaba, Déchainé and C'est quoi le projet, which will be distributed later in 2021 by his label Warrash Music Group. In March 2020, he released the single Enjaillement in collaboration with artists Delta Leflaw and Karen, a single distributed in 2021 by the rapper's stable. In 2022, he became the first Cameroonian rapper to collaborate with a Polish artist, singer Paula Strozewska, on the song Time,[3] which later passed the million listener mark on all streaming platforms.[4]
In 2023, he became the most listened-to Cameroonian rapper on SoundCloud,[5][6] with over 15 million cumulative listens.[7] In March 2024, Karl Warrash became the first Cameroonian rapper to be certified gold disc in Poland, with over 10,000 sales and the equivalent of 2.5 million streams.[8][9]
Musical influences[edit]
Karl Warrash is influenced by the French hip-hop scene of the 2010s, with artists such as Booba, La Fouine, Youssoupha and Sexion d'assaut, and by the trap-dominated American hip-hop scene of 2015, with artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Migos and French Montana. American melodies and rhythms at 130 BPM, punchlines and trashy techniques are present in the artist's songs.
