Potential spin-off[edit]
In April 2017, a spin-off movie was announced to be in development. Fede Álvarez signed on as director, with a script written by Jay Basu from an original story co-written by Álvarez and Basu. The plot of the film will take place in the same universe established in the original movie. The project will be a joint-venture production between The Jim Henson Co. and TriStar Pictures, while Lisa Henson will serve as producer. The filmmaker stated: "Labyrinth is one of the seminal movies from my childhood that made me fall in love with filmmaking. I couldn’t be more thrilled to expand on Jim Henson’s mesmerizing universe and take a new generation of moviegoers back into the Labyrinth.”[1]
Sequel[edit]
After decades of being in development hell, a sequel was officially in development in May 2020. Scott Derrickson signed on as director, with a script written by Maggie Levin, while Lisa Henson will serve as producer. The project will be a joint-venture production between TriStar Pictures, and The Jim Henson Company.[2] By October 2023, Derrickson announced that he had stepped down from his role as director due to creative differences with the studios and associated producers, though he stated that the sequel is still in active development.[3]
In February 2024 the Chairman of the Jim Henson Company, Brian Henson confirmed that development of the project is ongoing while stating that the company is "very excited" for its realization; before concluding that "we can't talk about it."[4]
