Category feedback[edit]

Currently the category of "Sportspeople_by_nationality" and "Athletes_by_nationality" are distint categories, with athletes being the British English definition (refering to "track and field athletes" in American English). Does everyone like this? Please leave a comment at Category_talk:Athletes_by_nationality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shawnc (talkcontribs) 08:32, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ridiculous political correctness[edit]

"Sportspeople" is not a legitimate word. This should be called Category:Sportsmen. Like all words that end in the suffix -man/-men, it refers to people of both genders. Only left-wing political activists use the fake word "sportspeople." — Preceding unsigned comment added by ResistorReactor (talkcontribs) 16:49, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sportspeople by century[edit]

@Hinto and Smasongarrison: you may not have been aware of the strong consensus at wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_January_12#20th/21st-century_sportspeople and its precedents when you created Category:21st-century sportspeople by nationality, Category:20th-century sportspeople by nationality etc. I advise you to stop creating any more or at least discuss them here before doing so, as these and their national subcats can probably be speedily deleted under WP:G4. – Fayenatic London 04:30, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. Are the gendered ones ok, sportsmen/women? Because I found them helpful to wrangling the mess that was Category:21st-century Polish people, which had spilt everybody up by Category:21st-century Polish men and Category:21st-century Polish women Mason (talk) Mason (talk) 04:31, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. I think wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_March_7#The_last_sportspeople_by_century says No; as it deleted 21st-century sportswomen, we should not have 21st-century Polish sportswomen.
This earlier 2009 CFD was closed with consensus to keep the intersections by nationality and century, but these were mainly envisaged as parent categories by occupation. As century subcats for C20 and C21 sportspeople were later deprecated, I think this means that articles on recent sportspeople should not be moved back up to e.g. Category:21st-century Polish women. Such articles should therefore not be categorised by century, unless of course they were also notable in another occupation where a C20/C21 split is accepted. – Fayenatic London 05:25, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, these were nominated at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2023_October_29#Category:20th-century_sportspeople_by_nationality with no consensus to merge/delete. – Fayenatic London 22:18, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding that link. I figured it was worth nominating to see what the temperature was on the issue. It has helped get some of the 21th-century categories to be more manageable. Mason (talk) 23:14, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
