Useless category[edit]

Would have made sense to create categories by shipyard. There used to be many yards in Helsinki; in addition to the current Hietalahti yard there were at least yards of Suomenlinna, Vuosaari, Katajanokka and Sörnäinen (Kone ja Silta). With different operators and history. Hard to imagine that anyone would find useful a this kind of category. --Gwafton (talk) 19:40, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Categories by shipyard would not be useful to many people, in my mind. Would "Category:Ships built by Vuosaari shipyard" make more sense to most readers than "Category:Ships built in Helsinki"? I think not, I think categories sorted by shipyard would be pretty much "useless", to use your word. Manxruler (talk) 22:24, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Besides, this is a completely common way of sorting categories with a lot of pages. See for example: Category:Ships built in Germany. Manxruler (talk) 22:27, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Categories by shipyard are more informative. Vuosaari yard used to belong to Valmet, Hietalahti yard to Wärtsilä. Later they were both put under Wärtsilä Marine, but remained as separate business units (for a short time, until Vuosaari yard was closed). What was common, both of them were located in the same administrative area, which was city of Helsinki. Besides, different companies had different specialisations. Therefore, having a category about Helsinki-made ships makes as much sense a category about Detroit-made cars or Silicon-Valley-made computer programs. I strongly suggest categorising the ships by yard, in the similar manner as in Category:Ships built at Admiralty Shipyard. Cheers, Gwafton (talk) 22:55, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
