Some of these people are not Jews but of some Jewish descent. Strummer for example.

In a broad sense, Jewishness can be religious, ethnic, or both. So even if, say, Strummer grew up secular, had a non-Jewish mother, and never had any thoughts on religion whatsoever, he might still be considered Jewish in some circles.
