Separation of Okinawan styles[edit]

The category of Okinawan martial arts is currently grouped in with Japanese martial arts. I think it would be good to create a new category for Okinawan martial arts, and then start to move the Okinawan arts out of the Japanese category. Okinawan martial arts should me made a subcategory of the Martial arts by regional origin category. It should not be a subcategory of Japanese martial arts, since many Japanese styles were imported from Okinawa. --Scott Alter 20:52, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think a history of the style migration is important. I also think there should be a difference in categories. However, I think any style that has a derivative from an Okinawan style should be linked in that article. I think we should trace a family tree almost to the person who brought the style over from Okinawa. Tkjazzer 23:41, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to start to create the structure for Okinawan martial arts within the Martial arts by regional origin category, but would like some input, since there is overlap with Japanese styles. Also, eventually existing articles about Okinawan styles will need to be reclassified. --Scott Alter 00:22, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming categories to reflect Japanese lineage[edit]

To further create a hierarchical structure, I would like to rename all of the martial arts within Japanese martial arts to include the name Japanese. For instance, "Karate" would become "Japanese Karate". This would allow articles to be better classified as "Japanese Karate", "Okinawan Karate", or from any other origin. The "Karate" category would then be moved to a different super category, and include all of the regional karates. This reorganization should help to clarify the history and origins of martial arts by styles, rather than simply country of origin. --Scott Alter 20:15, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
