There have beem a dozen or so additions to the electric vehicle catagory which could be put into this catagory. I'm not attached to this categories current name so I haven't added the rest of the vehicles, perhaps vintage electric vehicle would be better as a sub-category of vintage vehicles and electric vehicle catagories? Also what year would be appropriate, 1950? --D0li0 12:50, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I also expect to create a prototype electric vehicle catagory if articles are created for those vehicles listed on the battery electric vehicle page. --D0li0 12:50, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please note, D0li0 :
Also please note my recently-started discussion below on this very page. Use of this category is definitely currently controversial. Would appreciate your thoughts on what I've written.
Do please also properly create sections on talk pages ordered chronologically, if you please.

Sub-optimal diffusion from "Historic electric vehicles" to "Electric vehicles introduced in the Xth century"[edit]

We're going to have several problems with this diffusion and renaming, for many reasons. I think a CfD re-listing would have been more appropriate:

Chronological Problems[edit]

  • Diffusing by century is going to be incredibly awkward. There were only a very small handful of electric automobiles introduced in the 19th century. There were a few dozen in the 20th century, which sounds appropriate and health for a category.... but things get increasingly awkward the moment you move to the 21st century, wherein the great majority of vehicles are expected to be electric by 2030, and nearly all will be electric by 2040.
  • This category is therefore destined to become a "list of vehicles", which is untenable.
  • Diffusing by decade doesn't work, either. There was again a great quantity of electric vehicle research at the turn of the 20th century, but almost none by mid-century. You'll get a half dozen entries from the 1900-1910 era, and then almost nothing for the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, before the 80s and 90s ramp up. From there AGAIN, "Electric vehicles introduced in the 2020s" should be expected to compromise a great majority of vehicles by the end of the decade, and nearly all of them in the 2030s.

Vehicle vs Automobile[edit]

  • A secondary concern here is that the usage of the term 'vehicle' is improper.
  • The category as it was original built was clearly meant to imply automobiles — that's what the list comprises of.
  • However, 'vehicle' is way too broad. The category Category:Vehicles is actually an umbrella for all Vehicles, which would include watercraft, trains, planes, and scooters/mopeds.
  • For instance, a significant majority of passenger trains introduced in the 20th century (almost every single item in List_of_high-speed_trains for example) would qualify as 'Electric vehicles introduced in the 20th century'.
  • So again, a fundamental problem.

My suggestion again would be that the title refers only to 'pre-21st century' vehicles as an arbitrary marking point for historicity, and my suggestion would be that the category title refer to 'Automobiles', not 'Vehicles'.
