British and West End musicals[edit]

I don't think West End musicals should be a sub-category of British musicals. I reckon British musicals are works that are written in Britain intended (at least initially) for a British audience. West End musicals refers to musicals that have had West End productions, which could include British musicals but also American musicals and musicals from other places. West End musicals is not related to the category of musicals by country.Boneymau (talk) 02:44, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There should not be any categories for "British" musicals, "American" musicals, etc. Does this mean the country where it premiered? The country of the lyricist, book writer or composer? West End musical, I hope, means a musical that premiered in the West End. -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:54, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
1. Regarding the West End musicals category, the guidance at the top of the Category:West End musicals page says "Major musical theatre productions that have appeared in London West End theaters. See also West End theatre." So that category currently includes musicals like Annie, The Book of Mormon, A Chorus Line, Follies, not just those that premiered in the West End. I think that's a perfectly reasonable scope of category. 2. Regarding countries of musicals, as a thought exercise to take it outside the US and UK context, do you object to the current Category: South Korean musicals or Category: Hungarian musicals? They seem to me to be interesting and useful categories that highlight musicals from different cultures. Boneymau (talk) 21:47, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it's a problem for countries other than US and UK, because all other countries have a *much* smaller history of musicals and musical premieres, so identifying musicals that premiered in, say, France, would be very useful. Broadway, West End, Off-Broadway, and Off West End are more useful and specific cats for those markets, which are prolific and historically important for premiering musicals. I think it would be far more useful for the categories to include only musicals that had their premieres (or most important productions) in the market covered by the category. How does it help to include Annie in West End musicals?: "Have you seen Annie, the famous West End musical?" It makes the category less useful, not more useful. -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:21, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Les Misérables[edit]

Why is this musical missing? It stayed long enough and was a huge success in London? If it's because it originated from France, and not just an omission, other "foreign" musicals such as Cats are listed. I think the page should include all musicals that were ever shown in the U.K., or wikipedia won't be a reference for people searching this page for a musical they've seen years ago, like I just did.

If it's not listed for some reason, I think it should be listed, and the reason should be mentioned in parenthesis after its name, for instance (origin France), or there should be a link somewhere to a page listing these London shows, for instance a link and page "British musicals originating from other countries" or whatever the reasons for not including it in the main reference page, so remove any gap in coverage.--Chimel31 (talk) 07:51, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:West End musicals exists for the purposes I think you intend. Boneymau (talk) 08:08, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
