Untitled[edit]

This category is really very unpopulated. I suppose 1/10 of the American films on Wikipedia is here. This should be populated like Category:American actors. - Darwinek 13:39, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed people just removing things from this category outright in order to prevent category bloat. Is that according to policy? It seems like it would be better to make subcategories than to arbitrarily remove things from a valid category.--TexasDex 02:03, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have reorganized structure of page the page should only be one page and all the films diffused by decade neatly. I have also created categories to put the strayed sub categories in. Many this category has got way out of countrol and removing films from list entirely isn't the way to do it. I just think that the name is miss leading. Should films from South America also bee here, and Central America, Canada. They are all part of America. There should be another category United States films. --Steinninn 11:30, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An American film?[edit]

What is it that makes a film an "American film"? Does it have American actors, American writers, an American director, is it filmed in America, or is it a combination of the above? As it stands, this category is ill-defined. Martin 09:00, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should an American film article be listed in both parent and sub-categories ?[edit]

Is there some good reason why an American film article should state both parent and sub-categories to which that film belongs? The particular manifestation is Schindler's List, which is listed in 'American biographical films', 'American epic films' and 'American war films', so there is no possibility of the reader not realising that this is part ofCategory:American films. Text at the head of the category page says 'For convenience, all American films are included in this category. This includes all American films that can also be found in the subcategories.' Is the same thing as the parent category must be SHOWN on ALL American film articles, or is this listing achieved in the background?

A discussion has taken place on my talk page here:[1]. Clarification would be helpful, I've tried checking Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization and elsewhere but nothing seems to answer the question. It is in order to prevent 'categorization bloat', and because the parent category in this instance is so huge as to be unhelpful to the reader, that I ask the question. @Marcocapelle: apparently, the answer is 'yes', even if already listed as an American Epic/thriller etc. (or any other sub), the film must be listed as 'US film'. I forget the exact logic behind this ruling, but it MAY have been partly because 'US biographical' (or some others that start 'US') are actually subs of 'biographical',(logical ruling). Where is the discussion about this? According to WP:SUBCAT, "Apart from certain exceptions (i.e. non-diffusing subcategories, see below), an article should be categorised as low down in the category hierarchy as possible, without duplication in parent categories above it." — Mudwater^(Talk) 12:17, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This parent category has the template "For convenience, all American films should be included in this category. This includes all films that can also be found in the subcategories." American biographical films is a sub-cat of American films by genre and Biographical films by country, so not directly in the category of American films. WP:FILMCAT has been used for at least as long as I've been on WP (14 years+), and has this regarding the top-level county categories. Category now (mostly) empty[edit]

Please see here where consensus determined it was not needed after all to redundantly categorize films here, and that the basis for doing so like we did for many years was not sound. Consensus has changed and it's been determined we probably should not have done this to begin with. If anything should remain here and does not seem suitable for any subcategories, that can be determined on a case-by-case basis.
