The Battle of Ibiza was a minor naval clash fought on February 28-29, 1780. The battle began when a British ship started to fire shots at Illerim (a Swedish frigate). The British ship had been confronting the Swedish frigate repeatedly, after some time the Swedes on Illerim fought back. The battle resulted in British retreat after major damage on their ship.[1][2]

The Swedish frigate named Illerim had before been captured during an ongoing siege after sailing outside of Gibraltar. When the frigate got released in November it was too late for the ship to return home, so it stayed in the Mediterranean over the winter, which also was somewhat good, as Illerim could defend Swedish merchant vessels in the area.[1][2][3]

Aftermath[edit]

After the clash, the Swedish frigate repaired its damage in Málaga. It is also said that the Swedish commander, David Ankarloo, died after injuries.[1][3]
