École Des Navigateurs is a school that teaches French language in the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique or CSF in short. This school is the only school which is part of the Conseil Scolaire Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique in Richmond other than an online school.[1]

Staff[edit]

There is about 30 staff at École des Navigateur. Most staff are teachers, but some are School counselors, administrators and support staff.

History[edit]

Originaly opened in 1963 as Alexander Kilgour school and as an annex for Grauer elementary in the Richmond school district. It was closed in the early 2000’s due to it's lack of necessity to the school board. The Conseil Scolaire Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique has started renting it out since 2004 from the Richmond school district.

Today, it has around a hundred students[2] from kindergarten to seventh grade, divided into six divisions. It offers education and services in French to eligible students meeting the criteria of Article 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The teaching of English (English Language Arts) begins in the 4th grade. Students in the French program learn English as their first language. The school also offer the English as a Second Language (ESL) program for beginning students. the school includes a daycare service “les Matelots” as well as a pre-kindergarten, “les Moussaillons”.

At the Navigators school, students evolve in an environment constructive for learning, where everyone feels loved, respected, accepted and protected. The school's fundamental values ​​are focused on the personal, social, cultural and identity development of its students.

Mission[edit]

The school provides all learners with the opportunity to realize their potential and acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to contribute to a healthy, democratic and pluralistic society. It also contributes to bringing together the French-speaking community of Richmond through the feeling of collective pride it inspires.

Throughout the year, the school has cultivate their PHARE values ​​within the francophone school community. They celebrate these values ​​during their monthly assemblies:

  • Hot lunches once a week, on Thrusdays or Fridays
  • Volleyball teams that compete along with the Richmond school district and hold a tournement with the rest of near by Greater Vancouver elementary schools that are part of the CSF.
