20170507 UPDATE:

Here on Wikipedia, Avaiki as an "Editor" refers to me, Jason Brown, a journalist in the Pacific Islands.

As a Wikipedia editor, I chose the Avaiki username in reference to ANA, Avaiki Nius Agency, established by me in 1999, Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

This followed my role as publisher at the country's only Sunday newspaper, Cook Islands Press, from October 1994 to November 1998.

My long hoped for outcome of ANA becoming an indigenous news leader has yet to see any success, other than my own awareness and advocacy towards independence, freedom and ethics.

Fellow editors may also be interested in my attempt at a more 'open' resume, or curriculum vitae, what I've long called a curriculum veritas - what I've really learned - failures as well as successes (well overdue for an update) :

Curriculum veritas fall within another 'open' transparency approach, TTT (again, well overdue for update):

1. Idiocy. 2. "Why am I so rude?" 3. Mysterious visitor 4. I like bullying bullies

1. I have not updated this page for a long time because of my own idiocy in selecting an advanced option under My Preferences, thereby rendering myself unable to edit my own profile. See: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26716 for details.

2. I recognise bullies when I meet them. A fair few of them are barely above troll level, particularly on the pages dealing with Freemasonry. As a journalist, I am used to the type.

3. The mysterious visitor who asked that question - "Why am I so rude?" - themselves display the height of Wikipedia rudeness by not signing their name and somehow eluding the auto-IP signature. No matter. The edit history gives the anonymous IP address thus: 203.3.197.249 which in turn leads to this website: http://dnr.nsw.gov.au/ - an obvious misuse of public resources.

4. Now that I have my edit options back, be warned: there will be "opposition" to misuse of the "criticism" category.

OLD PROFILE

Avaiki is, in this case, long time reporter Jason Brown, me.

There is some trepidation in associating myself with the name Avaiki. After all, I am a papa'a or European, a manuiri or visitor. My friends and family, Maori in the homeland know me well and tease me about being a troublemaker. Maori Cook Islanders overseas don't know me from a shell of coconut, so may object to an ancestral name being claimed by an outsider, some shaggy blond.

Rightfully so. There would be even more concern if people knew I was going around registering every instance of Avaiki I can tap my keys into. However, rest assured gentle reader, that it is in a good cause. Like most countries, the Cook Islands are chronically short of writers. I am working as hard as I can to ensure that an industry evolves that ensures Maori Cook Island writers emerge to take my place, shame my face, and reclaim their space for their race.

As an adopted child of tane mahuta, I am confident that what emerges from adoption of this entity already meet with appropriately ethereal approval.
