Lev Klyatis (born March 4, 1933) is a Ukrainian engineer renowned for his contributions to product efficiency prediction, reliability testing, and predictive technologies. He has authored over 250 scientific papers, 15 books, and holds 30 patents.[1][2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9][10][11] [12][13] [14][15] His work focuses on the accurate simulation of real-world conditions, accelerated reliability, and durability testing technology.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

1.      Lev Klyatis was born in Kiev, Ukraine. He completed his secondary education at High School No. 10 in Kiev and then attended Dnepropetrovsk Agricultural University [16]. He earned a Ph.D. in Engineering Technology from Belorussia State Agricultural University [17]. Further advancing his expertise, Klyatis attained a Doctor of Science degree from Leningrad Agricultural State University [18] and a Habilitation Doctor of Engineering degree from Latvia State Agricultural University. [19]

Career[edit]

1.      During his tenure in the Soviet Union, Klyatis served as a Principal Specialist for the USSR Ministry of Agriculture and chaired a special group at the All-Soviet Union Institute of Mechanization of Agriculture. His roles in the Engineering Center TESTMASH and various research centers in Russia focused on predictive efficiency in engineering.

After migrating to the United States in 1993, Klyatis joined organizations such as the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He worked with Eccol, Inc., SoHaR, Inc., and served as a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He collaborated with NASA and engineering companies such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Carl Schenck, Black and Decker, and others. Klyatis was the United States representative for International Electrotechnical Commission in Aerospace Reliability.  

During his tenure in the Soviet Union, Klyatis made significant contributions to the field of reliability testing.[1]. After migrating to the United States in 1993, Klyatis contributed to various organizations, including ASAE (American Society of Agricultural Engineers).[21][22] and ASQ (American Society for Quality)[23], where he served as a fellow, congress section chair, and seminar instructor. He joined Eccol, Inc., as the Chair of the Reliability Department, later transitioning to SoHaR, Inc., as a Senior Consultant and Advisor, and a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology [24]

Klyatis's work extended beyond academia and consultancy; he collaborated with engineering giants such as NASA, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Carl Schenck, Black and Decker, offering expertise in addressing product degradation issues[1][4]. His insights and methodologies have been documented in numerous publications, standards, monographs and textbooks, influencing engineering practices worldwide.

In addition to his extensive research, authored books, and contributions to the field of engineering, Klyatis has written several notable books. In 2006, his book "Accelerated quality and reliability solutions" was published[7]. In 2012 he authored “Accelerated Reliability and Durability Testing Technology[15][11]. In 2018, he authored the "Reliability Prediction and Testing Textbook,"[3] offering comprehensive insights into predictive modeling and testing methodologies crucial for ensuring product reliability and demonstrates the ways for improving this process[13]. His 2020 publication, "Trends in Development of Accelerated Testing for Automotive and Aerospace Engineering"[4] received distinguished recognition by being selected for the Forbes 100 Best Books of All Time list. This acknowledgment underscores the impact of Klyatis's work in shaping not only engineering practices but also broader intellectual discourse. Most recently, in 2023, Klyatis released "Prediction Technologies for Improving Engineering Product Efficiency,"[1] offering innovative approaches to enhance product efficiency through predictive technologies. Negative trends in the development of simulation, testing, and prediction in engineering were analyzed, illuminating pathways for their improvement. These publications reflect Klyatis's commitment to knowledge dissemination and his ongoing efforts to shape the future of engineering practices.

Klyatis has received several accolades for his contributions to the field, including the ASQ Special Service Award, and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) nominated by the Aerospace Council, among other awards.[1][16][21]. He was elected as a Foreign Academician of the Russian Federation Academy for Quality and recognized as an ASQ Fellow for his outstanding innovations in the field of physical simulation, accelerated reliability testing, and accurate prediction that leads to improving quality, reliability, maintainability, and durability during design, manufacturing, and usage; for implementation practices via consulting, seminars, books, and more than 200 publications; and for more than 30 patents in different countries[1] [3][23][25]
